England and Wales Cricket Board director Andrew Strauss has announced that a new points system crossing all formats will be used for the matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. This new points system, being labelled as the 'Super Series' will get underway with the first Test between England and Sri Lanka at Headingley on Thursday.

According to this system, individual series trophies will still be at stake for the Tests, one-day internationals 
and one-off Twenty20 internationals. But along with that the sides can earn four points for a Test win, 
two for a draw, and two for a victory in T20s and ODIs.

The idea is Strauss' own, he admitted while explaining the logic behind it at Headingley on Wednesday- 

“

The rationale is that the game of cricket is evolving unbelievably quickly and we feel responsible to ensure the international game develops.

”

He added that they believed that this ‘Super Series” will connect the three formats and “ensure that every game counts for something more than itself”. Strauss said that this was a part of the ECB’s attempt to modernise the game and ensure that Test Cricket remains relevant to both the fans and the players.

England Test Captain, Alastair Cook also voiced his support for the points system by saying that one must be open to all ideas in this day and age.
