16.4 - Starc to J Root, FOUR, poor from Starc. Short and wide outside off, releases all the pressure as Root cuts hard off the back foot, the crowd go 'Roooottttttttt' - the familiar chant that we hear from the crowds in the UK

16.1 - Starc to J Root, FOUR, look at Clarke at 2nd slip. That's the most important thing about this whole delivery. His bowler has been off-driven for four through mid-off, but he clapped in encouragement as soon as Root hit it. The ball raced away. It was full and swung in but Root leant forward to meet the ball on top of the bounce. Lovely stroke and a good way to get off the mark

12.2 - Starc to Ballance, FOUR, full toss outside off and Ballance puts it away, had to hit the gap and did so. Ballance gets forward and pushes it in the gap at cover. Races away

8.2 - Johnson to Cook, FOUR, Cook was unsure, made a late decision to leave and the ball ran off the thick outside edge all along the ground past the diving third slip. This was full and swung away outside off. That should encourage Johnson

7.1 - Hazlewood to Cook, FOUR, lucky for Cook. He pushed forward to defend a full one on the stumps that nipped back in, gets a thick inside edge onto the pads, flies away through the vacant leg gully and short fine region

5.2 - Hazlewood to Cook, FOUR, short from Hazlewood and no real pace. At 81mph it is easy for Cook who sees it early and then pulls behind square, the ball rolls away beating fine leg to the fence. It is a slow pitch and not advisable to bowl short

4.0 - Hazlewood to Ballance, FOUR, edgy and four! Hazlewood is hitting great lines and lengths early on, good length on off, draws Ballance forward and produces the outside edge but the ball dies down and goes wide of the diving third slip. No third man and it races away

Tossed up from round the wicket by Lyon, Broad went for the slog sweep and got a thin bottom edge. Dharmasena had the finger up in a flash. Broad knew he had nicked it and walked off. 85.5 - Hazlewood to Buttler, out Caught by Johnson!! A soft, soft dismissal for Buttler. He has thrown it away and Hazlewood gets his third wicket of the day. This was pitched up on the stumps, Buttler was looking to whip it away past mid-on, but hits it a lot straighter. Ends up giving a simple catch to Johnson, who accepts it gleefully. 76.2 - Starc to Stokes, out Bowled!! Starc puts a finger on his lips and stares at Stokes as he makes his way back to the pavilion. Stokes departs just after reaching his fifty. This one came in with the angle and was fuller in length, Stokes was looking to work it away, the ball shapes away past the outside edge and crashes into off and middle. Any bowler in the world will be proud of that delivery and Starc, after troubling Stokes in the last over, finally gets his man. Stokes b Starc 52(78) [4s-6 6s-2]

72.1 - Starc to J Root, out Caught by Watson!! Second wicket for Starc and that's a good catch by Watto at first slip. End of an exceptional innings from Root. He gets a standing ovation from the capacity crowd at the Swalec stadium and he raises his bat to acknowledge the applause as he walks off. Fullish delivery outside off stump, Root plays for inswing as he goes for the drive, but it holds its line and goes with the angle from over the wicket, the ball takes a healthy outside edge and Watson moved low to his left and grabbed it with both hands. 53.3 - Hazlewood to Ballance, out Lbw!! Might be the lapse in concentration, Ballance who has played so patiently has to trudge back to the pavilion, he again exposes his weakness to full deliveries, full and swinging in, Ballance fails to clip it, he was sitting deep inside the crease and didn't watch for the swing, he got hit on the back leg, it looked plumb the moment it hit him, easy call for the umpire, that was hitting middle and leg. 14.3 - Starc to Bell, out Lbw!! Plumb! Australia have their third. Bell had a word with Ballance and then walked off. Erasmus had the finger up in a flash. Full and late swing for Starc, Bell was trying to get the bat down to defend, in front of the pad, the bat hit the pad and the ball too, but the ball did so first. Was it doing too much? Let's wait for Hawk-Eye. At worst it maybe umpire's call. Once the replays are in, will confirm. Bell lbw b Starc 1(7)

13.2 - Lyon to Cook, out Caught by Haddin!! Cut and edged. Good catch Haddin. That's a top edge and Haddin has hung on. This was the overspinner from Lyon, lots of revs on the ball, pitched and went straight on, wasn't short to be cut, bounced and then took the edge of Cook's bat. 2.0 - Hazlewood to Lyth, out Caught by Warner!! Goooonne! First blow for Australia and what a good low catch that is at gully. Full and on the stumps, Lyth was looking to work it through mid-wicket, the bat face closed way too early and the thick leading edge was dying on Warner who came forward and clasped it inches from the ground. Terrific beginning for the visitors. A wicket for Hazlewood in his first over on his Ashes debut. Lyth c Warner b Hazlewood 6(10) [4s-1]

14.5 - Starc to J Root, no run, now dropped by Haddin! Had to go for it with one glove and it didn't stick. Yorker length outside off, Root was trying to jam that out and it went straight off the edge and Haddin diving to his right couldn't hang on. Starc is disappointed. Would've been a big, big wicket for Root is the in-form player in this England side

100.3 - Starc to J Anderson, no run, vicious short ball from Starc, right at Anderson's throat. Anderson fended out and the ball was very close to the glove as he tried to keep it out. Since there was no conclusive evidence to overturn the decision, Gaffaney stuck by the original decision. HotSpot and RTS didn't provide anything for him to overturn the on-field call. Anderson survives

This is a massive wicket for England as Smith is in fine form. Being the lone spinner in the side and being picked ahead of Rashid, Moeen needed to perform and he's got the big fish now. Perfect delivery, full on the stumps, opened Warner up, who was pushing out. Healthy edge and would've been a dolly to third slip. Could still prove to be a big moment in the game

14.3 - Mark Wood to Warner, FOUR, that is dismissive from Warner. He has stood and delivered there. A good length delivery outside off, Warner swatted it with supreme arrogance past Smith. The ball races away and he stands there and twirls his bat showing more nonchalance and aggro, as he chews his gum. He sure looks to be in the mood to attack

Wood and the English fielders appeal and Erasmus raises his finger up, Watson is surely the Australian Ross Taylor for England, this will prove to be a big big problem for the Aussies if Watson continues to get out in this fashion. This was full and wide from Broad, no real need to go after that, Clarke plays way away from his body, had him reaching out for the drive, gets a thick edge and the ball carried through to Stokes at backward point. 26.3 - Moeen Ali to Warner, out Lbw!! Total misjudgement from Warner as he shuffles across and opts to play back instead of forward. He failed to pick that from Moeen Ali and is gone lbw. Quicker and angled in, Warner's bat was down the wrong line and well away from the ball, struck on the pad in front. The ball would've gone onto clip leg stump. 9.4 - Broad to Chris Rogers, out Caught by Bell!! Failure for Chris Rogers. His run of fifties has stopped. He was aiming to become the first player ever to record eight consecutive fifties in Tests but fails. Good delivery to get him out, angled in and then opened up Chris Rogers, the batsman was squared up and the outside edge carries low to Bell at 2nd slip. He got his fingers under the ball and claimed it. Chris Rogers didn't want to go. Stood his ground and finally the third umpire Gaffaney made the call after looking at the replays. Extra bounce from a good length area, it was outside off and Chris Rogers followed it with hard hands, it was flying to the left of Joe and despite diving and getting two hands, he can't hang on. 22.0 - Stokes to Warner, 1 run, down leg, swatted to fine leg, for a single. Fifty for Warner - his 15th in Tests. It has been a nuggetty effort from the little man. He hung in when Broad was troubling him and then has got runs after that tricky period was seen off. Looks set to carry on and make a big score. Australia need him to score many for them to have a chance of winning the game

5.3 - Broad to Warner, no run, wasted review from England. Warner was late on the defence, the ball clipped the back pad and missed the bat. Went through to Buttler. England were confident as was Warner that he hadn't hit it. He goes up to Chris Rogers and nods. Replays confirm that Dharmasena got that spot on
