The post-war (WW II) attendance boom in county cricket didn't last beyond a few seasons. All counties were trying to find out new strategies to counter the worsening situation. One of the counties found themselves in some trouble and turned to their finest cricketer.
They announced that he was making a comeback, well in advance. The word spread in no time and the tickets sold out fairly quickly.
There was a full house an hour before the match started, despite the overnight rain and terrible weather. Slowly, the sun could be seen and then, the man who they came to see was visible.
It was some occasion. The great cricketer, for one last time, managed to do what he did all life, by making sure there was a full house.
Gloucestershire's Wally Hammond.
