Everyone gets a little worked up around IPL auction time, and this year is no different. With Eoin Morgan & Ishant Sharma leading the pack of players with the highest base price (Rs. 2 crores = Rs. 200 lakhs), the franchises will compete fiercely to get the players they want, spoil the bid attempts of other franchises, and deal with attempts to spoil their own bids.
But people do tend to get carried away at times. Delhi Daredevils got into a bidding war over Pawan Negi, the slow left arm spinner and lower order bat who had impressed in his time at Chennai Super Kings, and ended up paying the astronomical amount of Rs. 8.5 crore for him. The results: 57 runs from 8 games and 1 wicket at more than 9 runs an over.
Some bidding wars and escalations are unavoidable, but each team will keep in mind an approximate maximum price, higher than which they will give a player up.
To help the teams, we came up with a cheat sheet: the Maximum Buy Price for players in the IPL Auction.
(All prices are in Lakhs of Indian Rupees INR)
Batsmen
The surprise standouts are two recent Antipodean debutants who were born a whole 11 years apart: Aussie veteran Michael Klinger is worth going all the way up to Rs. 10.05 crores, while New Zealand's young Tom Bruce is worth all the way up to Rs. 12.05 crores.

Bowlers
Despite the fact that he rates himself at 200 lakhs, Ishant Sharma is probably not going to be the most valuable bowler in the auction. Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, an accomplished legspinner in limited-overs internationals and several other T20 leagues, is worth his place and Rs. 13.45 crores, in almost any team. Good performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy have raised the profile of a number of lesser-known Indian bowlers as well, including Stephen Cheepurapalli and Rajwinder Singh.

All-rounders
Deep batting line ups and extra bowling options: all rounders can make all the difference in a T20. The standout here is Australian Ashton Turner, whose middle order batting and off spin earned him a successful BBL as well as a T20I debut against Sri Lanka. Among local boys, Amit Verma's heroics for Assam have made a few more people sit up and take notice.

Wicket-keepers
It is essential for wicket keeprs to score runs in T20s. Given the scarcity of deliveries with which runs can be scored or wickets taken, none can be wasted. Thus, the most valuable keeprs are those with reasonably safe hands who can keep the scoreboard ticking, like Afghanistan's one and only Mohammad Shahzad. A phenomenon in international cricket, one can only hope he will light up the IPL as well. Eklavya Dwivedi is a local boy who looks worth a shout as well.
