Parameters used

The initial impression that shadowed the introduction of Twenty20 that it is a format that basically begins at blind slogging, spends a few minutes at kitchen-sink-throwing and ends with a carefree chuckle after missing the ball is one that is beginning to fade away as the world is slowly beginning to accept that the 20-over format involves that little word which builds magicians in sports – skill.

The key, we understand, to get a ranking system to come as close to an accurate evaluation as possible is to understand what are the key parameters that influence the 20 over format.

As far as batting is concerned, the three primary factors would be the strike rate – it is all about quick scoring after all, the frequency of 50+ scores – since a 50 or a 100 in a 20 over game can be far, far more impactful than one in a 50 over game where the opposition has time to nullify it and the average- the best indicator of a player’s consistency.

But the factor that is more important than any of these is the relevance of these figures to the team’s performance. How much a player averages is not as important as how much he adds to his team’s average.

The three factors above have been given weights, seen in relation with the batsmen’s respective team’s averages, processed and brought out in the form of ‘Squadstats Ranking points’.

So, in a nutshell, Squadstats ranking points evaluates a batsman on how much he contributes to the team’s overall batting, based on the three broad parameters of average, strike rate and frequency of 50+ innings.
