Dinesh Chandimal, Upul Tharanga to lead Sri Lanka

Dinesh Chandimal will be leading Sri Lanka in Tests and Upul Tharanga will be leading them in ODIs and T20s.

After Angelo Mathews' announcement late Tuesday night on his resignation from captaincy from all formats, new captains were announced early Wednesday morning.

After Sri Lanka's shock and embarrassing series defeat against Zimbabwe, Mathews was contemplating quitting captaincy and he announced his decision.

Chandimal has been vice-captain before and just recently, Tharanga filled in as captain when Mathews was injured.

Speaking at the press conference of the announcement of the captains, Chandimal said,

I'm very thankful to the job that Angie [Mathews] has done for us. Captaincy is not an easy job. He's a match-winner for us, and I have huge hopes that he will continue to be one in the coming years as well.

Angelo Mathews had taken over captaincy from Mahela Jayawardene in 2012/13 and had since led in all 3 formats. However, Sri Lanka's decline in cricket led to Mathews' decision to step down from captaincy.

In the press conference, he said,

In the past also there were instances where I wanted to step down but I didn't want to let the team down at that time, mainly because there were no replacements. The team's interests supercede the individuals. Now there are candidates to take over, and I'm sure they will be more successful than me. I also wanted to give my successor time to build a team for the 2019 World Cup.

Sri Lanka will now play a Test match against Zimbabwe, followed by a series against India at home.
