Gunaratne will miss rest of the series against India

Asela Gunaratne will not take further part in the ongoing Galle Test against India. He will also miss* rest of the series after he sustained a fracture in his left thumb while fielding.

Gunaratne has undergone a surgery* in Colombo on Wednesday.

SLC cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha said,

It is a sad one - he will miss a minimum of four weeks, but I think it will be more, it is pretty serious. As soon as we saw the x-ray, we realised it was serious, so we sent him to Colombo.

Gunaratne picked up the injury in 14th over of the morning session where he was fielding in the second slip to the bowling of Lahiru Kumara.

Shikhar Dhawan nicked the ball and Gunaratne dived to his left in an attempt to catch the ball, only for the ball to hit him on the end of the thumb. The catch was dropped and soon after Gunaratne left the field holding his hand in pain.

Gunaratne’s absence is a major loss for Sri Lanka as the player played a crucial match winning knock of 80 not out against Zimbabwe in their last Test.
