In an announcement made by the English Cricket Board, arrangements have been made for the retired Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene to join the management team for a consultancy role. Former England captain Paul Collingwood will join the Sri Lankan for a different role.
While Jayawardene is set to take over batting consultancy, Paul Collingwood will work with England’s limited over squad in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Jayawardene’s first role in assisting the England Test Squad would certainly be vital for their upcoming tour in the United Arab Emirates. Having played over 650 matches for Sri Lanka over the last 18 years, Jayawardene’s involvement is believed to assist the English batsman to a great extent.
ECB England Cricket director, Andrew Strauss said,
“
We are delighted that Mahela and Paul will be joining the England management team, supporting our existing specialist coaches in this area.
”
“Both will bring a vast wealth of cricketing knowledge and expertise to the team, and in Mahela’s case, extensive experience of batting in the sub-continent which will be invaluable as part of our wider preparations for the UAE tour.”
