Anderson struck four times after lunch to wreck Australia's middle order. Voges, Marsh, Nevill and Johnson were sent packing in quick succession. Rogers held one end firmly and got to yet another fifty - but he perished soon after the second break in play. The tailenders resisted a bit, but the visitors will be disappointed with the final total. Anderson finished with 6/47, his best bowling performance in Ashes Tests, Broad and Finn chipped in with two each and it's time for the batsmen to seize the advantage. Join us in a while..

A top bowling performance from England after being asked to bowl first. The pitch didn't help the bowlers a lot - but had enough to keep them interested. Rain then paused play for 30 minutes and after the resumption, both Chris Rogers and Adam Voges batted with a positive mindset and ensured that there was no more damage done. With a bit of cloud cover around and the ball doing its bit every now and then, England will fancy their chances in the second session. Australia would hope that the sun comes out and dries out the pitch to make life slightly better for their batsmen. Join us back at 13:40 local time for all the action.

England continued to bowl the fifth-sixth stump line to Steve Smith and did not allow him to play his shots. Cook removed Broad after just three overs and introduced Steven Finn into the attack. The move turned out to be a masterstroke as Finn, who was playing his first Test match since July 2013, had Smith caught well by Cook at first slip with the last ball of his opening over. Finn was more confident in his second over and increased his pace as well. Soon, he castled the Australian skipper (Michael Clarke) with a fantastic yorker to reduce the visitors to 34/3.

An excellent morning session for England. It turns out that it was a good toss to lose for Alastair Cook. With a bit of grass cover on the pitch and a few dark clouds overhead, the hosts couldn't have asked for anything better and Cook's bowlers did not disappoint. David Warner was almost run-out second ball of the game, but he just managed to make his ground, thanks to a full length dive. However, the left-hander did not make the most of the opportunity as James Anderson trapped him plumb in front in his second over.

And for this game Australia went for Nevill after the NSW-man impressed on debut

Broad was celebrating with his team-mates, assuming he had got Warner out but replays proved that Warner's dive saved him. It went to the third umpire who confirmed the same

So England have a handy lead of 145. After lunch it was a different Moeen Ali that one saw. Before lunch he looked like he would get out to any ball that he faced but post the break he came out with a positive intent and along with Broad took the attack to the bowlers. Runs came at a fair clip and the lead swelled quickly. Just when the shoulders of the Aussies looked to be dropping, Broad got out and the last two wickets fell immediately afterwards. Still it is advantage England even though it must be said that the sun is out and Australia one assumes won't fold like they did in the first innings

Lyon continued to trouble the batsmen and in one over had Moeen Ali in knots. Moeen was continously beaten and has been very lucky to survive till lunch. Broad is giving him company at the other end. Starc got a lucky wicket when Root chased a wide one after reaching fifty and nicked to slip. Soon Johnson came back as Moeen Ali was at the crease. At the other end Lyon was brought in and got the wicket of Buttler. Buttler didn't review after being adjudged lbw and replays showed that it was turning and missing the stumps. After walking at Lord's he has made another error by not reviewing even though it must be said to the naked eye it looked plumb as he was struck in-line and just around the kneeroll of the pad.

It was expected that Australia would come back strongly on day 2 and they have done just that. The tone was set by Mitch Johnson in the second over of the day as he produced two throat-smashers and got rid of Bairstow and Stokes respectively. The lead was only 6 at that time and Johnson was smelling blood. But Root and Buttler nullified Johnson's threat and feasted on Starc's waywardness to build a nice little stand. Starc was all over the place and disappointed his skipper who was expecting someone to carry forward the gains made by Johnson.

The weather looks good at the moment. Yesterday it started drizzling towards the fag end of the day and stumps were called early. So, 30 minutes will be added to the day's play. And if the overrate is good, we should get 98 overs. Hopefully, the weather remains like this - bright and sunny, for the whole day.

Andrew Ramsey's report for the Cricket Australia website has this as the headline: "Australia endure forgettable day one." He credited England bowlers and believes that Australia still have a chance of making a comeback. "As it stands, Australia might not have surrendered the Ashes on a wasteful day, but they certainly relinquished the grip they had played so doggedly to maintain in a Lord's Test that now seems a season in meteorological if not sporting terms ago."

"Voges was stationed at short leg. Rather than turn his back as Cook was about to unleash a full-blooded shot in his direction, as some close fielders prefer, Voges crouched in the hope the ball would pass over him. Instead, his squat was timed so perfectly that it trapped the ball between his right arm and chest, near his armpit. His successful retrieval of the ball left slip fielder Clarke visibly shocked, but delighted." he added.

Jesse Hogan, expressing his opinion for The Sydney Morning Herald, highlighted Voges' catch and mentioned that Australia's dirty day in at Edgbaston could have been even more putrid had Voges not produced an astonishingly fortuitous catch to remove England captain Alastair Cook.

"Clearly something has happened between these teams that will leave the officials needing to keep a close eye on the rest of this Investec series. But for now the drama is no lesser for that and England are right back in it after looking down and out at Lord's. The next instalment today cannot be missed," he concluded

Paul Newman's article for The Daily Mail carries this headline: "England bowlers demolish dismal Australia for 136 before batsmen seize the initiative."

Speaking about English bowlers and their strengths, Mike Selvey's piece for The Guardian says, "All the England bowlers have craved in order to contest this series is a little bit of help. Give them a flat pitch, a shirtfront like Lord's, and they cannot compete against the sheer pace of the Australians. But a bit of nibble and they are in the game. It does not much matter how it comes: brooding low cloud and swing; grass and dampness to help the ball off the seam. Neither is the pace of the pitch of primary importance. Give us some lateral movement, they say, any kind, and we can expose frailties in batting in those unused to combating it."

Geoffrey Boycott, writing for the BBC sport said: "England are in perfect position. They couldn't have dreamed of this after Lord's. They will be just saying to go in and show patience, discipline and bat. But Bell and Lyth gave their wickets away and they need to stop doing that. Make them bowl you out."

Australia, on the other hand, had a forgettable day. Apart from Chris Rogers none of the batters could cope with the swing of the English bowlers. The veteran registered his 9th 50-plus score in his last 11 innings. Some late order contribution helped them get past the 100-run mark. The bowling was also not that threatening. Starc and Johnson couldn't trouble the hosts' batsmen. If not for a couple of lucky breaks from Lyon, the scorecard would have looked far more embarrassing. Can the visitors turn it around today? Day 2: Just a day before he turned 33, James Anderson recorded his best Ashes figures. On a wicket that didn't have any demons, England's premier bowler wrecked havoc, picking 6/47. He kept it plain and simple - pitched the ball up and got it to swing both ways. This performance came after he went wicketless for the first time in a Lord's Test. England needed something special after they were blown away at Lord's and Anderson provided that.

Australia much like at Cardiff bowled very full and weren't on the money. Starc and Johnson were off-color and only a couple of lucky breaks helped them get three wickets. Cook was desperately unlucky while Bell gifted his wicket away. Often Clarke was seen scratching his beard and looking for answers.

This Test so far bears a close resemblance to the Ashes Test of 2010 at Melbourne. On Boxing day on a sticky MCG wicket, England bowled Australia out for 98 and then reached close of play on day 1 at 150/0. Back then it was Anderson, Tremlett and Bresnan who did the trick. The end result of that game - England won by an innings and 157 runs. Also the clear difference between Australia's effort with the ball and England's earlier in the day was the home side put the ball where they wanted to and gradually built the pressure with Anderson outstanding either side of lunch.

England came out and soon Lyth fell - yet another failure for him in the series - chasing a full and wide one. Bell was in at three and played a glorious innings till he gave it away to Lyon after his fifty. The Bell of old was there to see as he essayed those sumptuous drives and even the late cut - which he is a master of - made its appearance. Off Hazlewood he got a hat-trick of boundaries and his footwork was much better in this innings. He even took the short ball and didn't look the nervy, fidgety player one saw in the first couple of Tests.

The other bowlers complemented Anderson and even though the pitch wasn't unplayable, England pitched the ball up and got it in the right areas. They played the patience game and were rewarded. Australia were poor with the bat except for Chris Rogers. Indecision and inability to handle the moving ball meant that they folded like a pack of cards. It was never a 136-run first innings pitch.

England's day by a mile. Clarke won the toss and opted to bat first. But his decision wasn't vindicated by his batsmen as they folded for 136 inside 37 overs. Anderson the bowling star with a 6-fer. His 6 for 47 was his best Ashes figures and came on the back of a wicketless Test at Lord's. When the pitch offers some assistance and with the ball moving sideways, Anderson often turns up and he did today.

Due to a persistent drizzle, the day's play has been officially called off. Now, 30 minutes will be added to the second day's play to make up for the lost time.

Several reports suggest that he might miss rest of the Ashes, here is what the NDTV sports website said : "James Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, is in danger of missing the fourth Test against Australia and possibly the rest of the Ashes series after suffering a side injury at Edgbaston on Thursday."

Cricket Australia website: Andrew Ramsey came up with this epic headline which sums up the story of struggling Aussies. "Hope is eternal but unlikely to spin new ending for Aussies." He supported his headline with a kicker which said: "Records are made to be broken but after a dark day any dreams of miracle appear shattered."

The Sydney Morning Herald: "Suddenly, Lord's seems so long ago, Cardiff almost another era. Hell, day one here seems a distant memory, categorised merely as bad. So much has happened since, almost all of it diabolical for Australia, and still it is only the second evening," writes Greg Baum. His headline reflects the same emotion: "Oh, for last week's good old days."

The Telegraph: Jonathan Liew signifies Moeen Ali's battling knock and is a little harsh on the English keeper. "England's 'weak link' Moeen Ali seizes the moment, but Jos Buttler is a shadow of his usual self."

The Daily Mirror: Sir Ian Botham's verdict expresses concern over Anderson's injury and he expects the king of swing to miss the rest of the series through injury. Beefy (Botham) has always been a true character (in and out of the field) isn't it? His concerned-headline reads: "England were magnificent - but Jimmy Anderson is a huge concern."

The Guardian:

Meanwhile, Vic Marks throws the spotlight on the Aussie skipper and mentioned that 'As the pendulum swings again in a compelling Ashes series and his run drought continues, the clock is ticking on Clarke's Test career." Surely, Michael wouldn't like reading this header: "Australia captain Michael Clarke faces battle to retain his place."

Mike Selvey's piece talks about Steven Finn's impact on this Test match while crediting the patience of Peter Nevill. His headline says: "Steven Finn fires England to verge of victory with five-wicket haul."

The delighted English Authors/cricketers and gutted Aussie writers/cricketers - That's the mood in the media camp. For a change, let's just have a look at the headlines in different newspapers regarding the EVER-BURNING-ASHES

Just when critics went severe on Peter Nevill, he stood up and avoided Australia from facing an embarrassing defeat. Remember! The last time Australia lost a Test match inside two days was in 1890. Surprisingly, Nevill is the only batsman to have faced more than 100 balls in an innings so far. A certain loss stares at the Aussies while England are just left with the formalities. Something magical has to happen if anyone from Australia are to change the fate of this Test match. Nevill has a (slightest of) chance to become the hero and rewrite history, but will Starc/Hazlewood/Lyon stick around. I suspect not.

10:10 Local Time, 09:10 GMT, 14:40 IST: Hola everybody! An England win and a first session finish on the cards. What an engrossing Test match cricket we've witnessed in the past couple of days. 27 wickets fell in 2 days and it's England who dictated terms throughout. Australia's batting woes continued on day 2 with Steven Finn creating all sorts of problems to the Aussie batsmen. The skipper (AUS) himself has been a huge disappointment so far while Mitchell Marsh has wasted yet another great opportunity.

Australia do have hope. They have done the improbable many a time with the Sydney Test against Pakistan in 2010 fresh in memory. There they had a Michael Hussey batting with the tail. They achieved a famous victory after setting a small target. Can Peter Nevill become the new Hussey? We'll have to wait and watch. It has been a long day but I thrive on days like these. The key to England's bowling as we saw on day 1 too was their ability to build pressure by swinging and seaming the ball. All their three pacers were disciplined with Finn leading the pack. Australia's batting was always known to be suspect when the ball moves and this Test has magnified that weakness even more. Failures for Clarke, Smith and Voges mean that some serious questions will be raised. This game should end quickly on day 3. I'm going for it to finish before lunch. Let's see

Soon Australia were seven down and staring at a two-day defeat but Nevill and Johnson built a plucky stand. Anderson went off with a suspected side strain and suddenly the bowling didn't look threatening. When it looked like Australia would see it through till stumps, Finn came back to send Johnson out. Nevill and Starc then saw off some nervy moments to take the game into day 3

After lunch the scenario changed and Moeen and Broad went on the attack. Runs came and the lead swelled. The last three wickets fell quickly and England's lead was cut to 145. Australia needed a good start - they didn't get one as Rogers fell to Broad. Smith played a poor shot and the visitors were in early trouble. In the final session it was Finn who came in off his long run and did his best impersonation of McGrath and Ambrose as he ripped through the Aussie batting line-up. He was on a hat-trick when he dismissed Clarke and Voges but Marsh saw off the hat-trick ball

Earlier in the day, Johnson in his opening over produced two stunning short deliveries to get Bairstow and Stokes out. That rekindled Aussie hopes as their premier fast bowler smelt blood. But a combination of Root and Buttler plus wayward bowling from Starc and Hazlewood meant that the pressure wasn't sustained for long. Lyon came on and picked up Buttler. And then Johnson and Lyon made Moeen Ali's life miserable. There were plenty of plays and misses before lunch as Ali was all at sea against the duo

Everyone go up to Finn and congratulate him. Lots of patting and clapping around. He is asked to lead the side off the field. He doffs his cap to a section of the crowd and has the honor of leading the side into the dressing room. Nasser on air put it very well when he said - "from being termed 'unselectable' he is now pretty much undroppable." Finn was the star of the day with his five-for putting his side well on their way to going 2-1 up in the series. The game would've ended today if not for Nevill and Johnson's defiance

Warner struggled against Anderson's middle and leg line, with the outswingers shaping away late and squaring him up. He survived that examination and has blossomed as the innings wore on. Quickly he has raced onto 56 in the process registering the joint fastest-ever Ashes fifty. He is a big threat for England. Smith flopped once again and that has brought Clarke into the crease. The Aussie skipper needs runs and what better time than to produce it here in the second innings

This game has moved on so quickly that we may get a result in three days. England were seven down at lunch and they came out with a plan to get quick runs. Moeen Ali and Broad did just that before the last three wickets fell in a flash. After taking a lead of 145, England struck early with Broad getting Rogers out lbw. A big wicket that for Rogers has played really well in the series so far.

Adding to that previous post on England's bowling in the match. Despite the sun out now, both Anderson and Broad have looked threatening. Apart from Johnson today, Australia's bowling never looked capable of exerting pressure and produce the wicket-taking deliveries with Starc being extremely disappointing. One also has to say that Lyon was under-bowled and looked the most likely after Mitch Johnson to take wickets

The difference between Australia's bowling effort and England's in the match has been the way Anderson and Broad have bowled. They have constantly kept the pressure on. No loose deliveries and if the runs have to come, then the risk has to be taken by the batsmen.
