Gavin Larsen named New Zealand cricket team selector

Larsen, who built a reputation as a miserly bowler, played eight tests and 121 one day internationals for New Zealand between 1990 and 1999, will assist Black Caps coach Mike Hesson in selecting New Zealand test, ODI and T20 squads, as well as the New Zealand A side.

Larsen, 52, was most recently the cricket operations manager for New Zealand during the Cricket World Cup.

He said he was thrilled to take up the role.

I have the utmost respect and admiration for the way the Black Caps have moved things forward under Mike's direction and I'm looking forward to helping that progress continue.

- Larsen said.

"It's impossible not to be impressed by the consistency and stability of the selection process in recent years, which, I believe, points to excellence in terms of leadership."

NZC head of cricket Lindsay Crocker said Larsen's credentials would stand him in good stead for the role.

"Gavin will be a real asset. His breadth of experience – as a player, as a Cricket World Cup administrator and a former chief executive of Cricket Wellington means he's stayed close and connected to the game."

Larsen's first responsibility in the new role was assisting in the selection of the Black Caps squad for Zimbabwe and South Africa - set to be announced on Thursday.

Edgar left the role in May amid claims of a personality clash with Crocker. He has since taken on coaching the Wellington Firebirds, a role he will start on August 3.
