Dravid gobsmacked

( 2801 views )

It should come as a surprise (or not really given Indian Selection criteria over past few years) that Dravid gets dropped against the current best ODI side, Australia having won the Champions Trophy formidably. A look at the team shows who replaced him (or who could be replaced for him from the squad): Raina, Kohli and Jadeja. Lets have a look at statistical end of it.

Their performances over 2009 (whenever they were picked and dropped) have a story to tell. Their averages in the whole year are as under: Dravid - 36 (6 Matches), Jadeja 33.5 (3 Matches), Kohli 97 (3 Matches), Raina 41 (13 Matches). Dravid has pretty competent case against Jadeja (as Jadeja had only had one innings of 60* to boost his average (in a dead rubber match against Lanka, whre India were leading the series 3-1 in a 5 match series) although he can contribute with bowl also).

However if averages are calculated excluding component "not outs" (skews the averages prominently, for lower sample size specially), these are the averages that churn out: Dravid - 36, Jadeja - 22.3, Kohli 32.3 (boosted by 79 not out against a second string Windies in,again, a dead rubber) Raina 28. A case against all three, isn't it?

Dravid's best knocks have been 76 in a lone-hand effort against Pak in CT, a lone hand 47 against Lanka, an innings where he top scored as India collapsed for 168 and 39 as an opener in the final of the Compaq Cup against Sri Lanka.

This is the statistical side of the story. But, traditionally, to find flaws in selectors' decisions you don't need to go that far. You just look for the logic angle and you'll almost invariably find your winning argument. Dravid was brought back as a old, wise head ruse to bolster the Indian middle order as the team of slam-bang superstars struggled for stability in the 50 over format. "Listen From between when he was brought in and now, there is little to suggest that

Recently concluded Challengers Trophy was much hyped (by media, crowd gave it a grand miss) for selection to India-Australia ODIs. Jadeja and Raina were a part of it at an average of 26 and 8!

On the other hand, Kohli and Dravid have been a part of CL that is yet to conclude. Dravid in his only opportunity bat scored a 28 @ SR 117 and Kohli has scored 49 runs in 2 matches @ SR 149. Another clear case for Dravid, I must say.

Speculation maybe, but Dravid has been second choice to promising but yet not fully riped youngsters (statistics from 2009 suggests that).
