" This is the last day of my holiday"
In 1948 Winston Place played Test cricket for England. Thrice.
But that is not the highlight of his long career at the first-class level. He successfully represnted Lancashire till 1955, starting his career even before the second World War commenced.
After 13 summers of county cricket, the secretary of the Lacashire CCC told him that his time was up.
Place was in tears.
At the end of his first summer with the club, when asked where he would be going for holiday, Place had replied, " This is the last day of my holiday."
