Too Close for comfort

Brian Close was one of a kind.
As Yorkshire's captain, he once sent Phil Sharpe and Ken Taylor out to bat with clear instructions: "I want 100 runs in 40 minutes. Don't get out and don't make it look easy."
Once facing Andy Roberts, Close came down the wicket and let the ball hit him on the chest. When the non-striker asked, "What are you doing", he replied, " I just wanted too see how fast he was."
Bomber Wells once said, "I Closey had an ounce more grey matter, he'd have been England captain for ten years. He was a bit puddled."
