Jardine and Australia
|
|
Apparently, Douglas Jardine's relationship with Australia and Australians improved after he retired from the game.
But he always knew how most Australians thought about him.
A dinner was organised for the visiting Australians in 1953. Robert Menzies was the guest speaker.
Menzies began a story by saying, "As you all know, I am the man in Australia who has most often had the legitimacy of his birth queried..."
Jardine stopped him there, "Surely, sir, I still hold that honour."
