If you try you can become the captain in a year

Lindsay Hassett retired at the end of the 1953 Ashes series. Australia needed a new captain.
Ian Johnson had a poor 1953/54 season and was reconsidering his career options.
In the New Year's Party that year, he met Hassett in a party. The latter rebuked him for not trying hard enough. Johnson didn't admit at first but Hassett went on saying, " You're just mucking around. If you've got any brains at all, you'll start taking the game seriously. Because if you do, you'll end up captaining Australia next year."
Johnson was furious and left the party.
He did become the captain of Australia, and that too within a year.
