The match between Australia and Pakistan at Gujranwala in 1994 was washed out by rain. But the crowd, unable to accept this, began a riot. Officials had to persuade the teams to play a 12-a-side 15 overs an innings match. The deputy commissioner of Gujranwala told Mark Taylor, the Australian captain, "If you don't play some cricket, they'll kill us."
Taylor said that he had never heard a more pressing reason to play.
