Dropping the disturbing matter
|
|
The great Australian leg-spinner Arthur Mailey always carried powdered resin in his pocket and when the umpire wasn't looking, he lifted the seam for the two fast bowlers.
One day, Johnny Douglas, the opposition captain, asked Mailey to show him his hand. He examined the hand carefully and said, " Arthur, you've been using resin. I'll report you to the umpire."
Mailey then asked Douglas to show him his right hand. He looked at the thumbnail and found it worn to the flesh on the outside.
"You've been lifting the seam, Johnny.", Mailey said.
Douglas grinned, and the matter was dropped.
