Here are a few tweets praising the wondrous batting of AB de Villiers

And if one casts their mind back to the opening 10-15 overs, West Indies bowled with great discipline. A score of 280 looked tough at that stage. But that's the genius of AB with help from the others. Also credit to SA for sticking to their gameplan of batting solidly till the 35th over and then unleashing.

Have a look at these mind-boggling numbers that South Africa racked up - last 20 overs - 261. Last 15 - 222. Last 10 - 150. Last 5 - 96. Holder's first spell read - 5-2-9-1. Then 3-0-31-0. Last two overs - 34 and 30 respectively. Final figures - 10-2-104-1. Worst figures in WC history for a 10-over spell and by a captain. Phew! Just insane stuff!

de Villiers: "I am also a bit surprised. Very enjoyable knock today, I thought the foundation the boys laid up front once again allowed us to free up. I don't know, it's just one of those knocks that I think the ball obviously bounced my way. Little bit of luck here and there and I made it count. Not a huge fan of setting targets. We had our basic plans in place. A score around 300 halfway through the innings looked like an achievable total and we were probably pushing for that, maybe 320. And you get some of those days where you click in the last 10 overs. I thought Rilee (Rossouw) played an exceptional knock, great injection of momentum therefore for us and I could bat around him in the start and then could free up at the end as well. It's a bit of everything, bit of a pain in the previous game, this game is only halfway and the only thing on my mind is to win this game. So, a lot of things play a role and we are just ready to defend this total now."

AB de Villiers, the man of the moment, spoke to Russel Arnold and we have transcribed the interview word by word.

On a slightly controversial note, Ian Gould, one of the umpires, seemed to have a problem with the condition of one of the balls used for the match. He had discussions with both Holder and Taylor.

The West Indies camp would be disappointed as they bowled well upfront. Holder perhaps missed a trick by not having a first slip for Benn. Benn was getting a nice drift and troubled Amla and du Plessis. He also made a mistake by introducing Darren Sammy into the attack when de Villiers took strike. Barring an excellent catch taken by Jerome Taylor at long-on to dismiss David Miller, West Indies's fielding wasn't up to the mark. It is a good wicket for batting and at the SCG, the dew factor may come into play, but it has to be remembered that so far only Ireland have been successful in a chasing down a target in this World Cup in Australia.

Initially, de Villiers played with a full face of the bat against the seamers. In 40th over of the innings, de Villiers then gave a glimpse of his immense ability by clobbering the wily spinner Sulieman Benn for two fours and a six. He essayed a majestic shot over extra cover for a six and followed it up by going right back in the crease to play the cut shot and collect four runs. He also used the sweep shot to good effect. The century stand between Rossouw and de Villiers came in a mere 60 deliveries. It was Andre Russell, who eventually took the wicket of Rossouw, but by then, the damage was already done. de Villiers though, continued to smash the Windies bowlers to shreds. He even used the scoop to thump Russell for a couple of sixes and clobbered Holder for 34 runs in the 48th over of the innings. de Villiers composed his century in 52 deliveries and took just 12 more deliveries to get to his 150. His century turned out to be the second fastest in the history of the World Cup. He now holds the record for the fastest 150 in ODIs. South Africa also amassed their highest total in World Cups.

The experienced duo of Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis, then looked to steady South Africa's innings. Both the batsmen had their fair share of luck, but they set a solid foundation with a century stand. It was Chris Gayle, who struck twice in a single over to send du Plessis and Amla back to the pavilion. But just in the nick of time, de Villiers and Rossouw ripped apart the opposition ranks with their sizzling knocks. It was Rossouw, who upped the tempo by smashing a flurry of boundaries square of the wicket on either side. He reached his fifty in style by playing a forceful cut shot off Taylor over backward point for a six. de Villiers took over from him to dismantle the Windies attack with a wide array of shots.

After South Africa's top-order batsmen struggled against a disciplined effort by the West Indies' seamers upfront, the sparkling explosion of fireworks from the willow of AB de Villiers and Rilee Rossouw helped them to recover and post a mammoth total on the board. In fact, West Indies started on a good note, with Jason Holder and Jerome Taylor bowling with purpose. Both of them produced movement off the deck and Holder also extracted awkward bounce from the surface. Interestingly, they looked to cramp South Africa's opener Quinton de Kock for room and the plan worked, with Holder snaffling the wicket of de Kock.

49.6 - J Holder to de Villiers, SIX, shuffles across to this low full toss angling in around off, gets under it and hammers it over the deep square leg boundary for another six, this was just too good from de Villiers, after conceding 34 runs in the last over, Holder concedes 30 in this one. This is also the highest score on Australian soil

49.5 - J Holder to de Villiers, SIX, full on the stumps, de Villiers launches it over the long-off fence for another maxmimum, he missed out on the fastest 150 in the last month, but this time he has done it

49.4 - J Holder to de Villiers, FOUR, full outside off, de Villiers brings up his 150,the fastest 150, with another boundary. He took just 12 balls to reach 150 from the 100-run mark, de Villiers lofted this to the right of long-off, who could only see it crashing into the fence

49.3 - J Holder to de Villiers, SIX, banged in short and outside off, de Villiers rocks back and muscles the pull over the deep mid-wicket fence for back-to-back sixes

49.2 - J Holder to de Villiers, SIX, shuffles across to this fullish delivery on middle stump line, de Villiers gets under it and launches it over the deep backward square leg fence, this is just too good for the West Indies' captain

49.1 - J Holder to de Villiers, 2 runs, fuller and on the stumps, de Villiers puts his front foot out of the way and goes for the slog, ends up miscuing it through mid-wicket but it was good enough for a couple

48.6 - A Russell to Behardien, no run, slower ball outside off, Behardien was lining up for a big one, but can't connect, the keeper collects

48.5 - A Russell to de Villiers, 1 run, dropped by Smith! It was fuller length outside off, de Villiers uppishly drives to extra cover, where Smith tries to reverse cup it, but floors it, Holder is not happy with the effort

48.4 - A Russell to de Villiers, FOUR, back of a length delivery from Russell, de Villiers rocks back and pulls it towards deep mid-wicket, the fielder dives to his right but can't get a hand on it, the umpires check whether it was a six or a four, but the ball bounced before the rope

48.3 - A Russell to Behardien, 1 run, very full on middle, Behardien squeezes it out towards mid-wicket and was looking for the single there, de Villiers was backing up too far and the fielder has a shy at the non-striker's end, he misses as de Villiers dives and the batsmen then get the single on the overthrow, poor cricket from West Indies there

48.2 - A Russell to Behardien, SIX, Behardien joins the party now, it was full and around off, Behardien gets under it and sends it up and over the long-off fence for his first maximum, great batting from the South Africans here

48.1 - A Russell to Behardien, 2 runs, fullish delivery angling in on middle, Behardien chips it over mid-wicket for a couple

47.6 - J Holder to de Villiers, SIX, on a length and on the stumps, de Villiers smashes it to the deep mid-wicket fence, the ball sails well over the rope - 34 came off that Holder over, the 2nd most expensive over in WC history

47.5 - J Holder to de Villiers, 2 runs, slower ball from Holder, de Villiers mistimes the loft, Benn runs back from mid-off, tries to dive, but can't even get a hand on it, the batsmen take another two

47.4 - J Holder to de Villiers, FOUR, this time he goes on the off-side, it was around off, de Villiers changes his stance and reverse sweeps it over the short third man and the ball runs away to the fence in no time

47.3 - J Holder to de Villiers, FOUR, a boundary off the free-hit, it was a low full toss and around off, de Villiers goes across and hoicks it to the deep backward square leg fence

Free-hit coming up

47.3 - J Holder to de Villiers, no ball, FOUR, what a super shot! He goes down on one knee after shuffling across and scoops it to the fine leg fence, another no-ball from Holder, he has lost his footing here

47.2 - J Holder to de Villiers, 2 runs, de Villiers can't get a boundary off the free-hit, it was fuller and outside off, de Villiers mistimes the drive to widish long-off, the batsmen come back for the second

47.2 - J Holder to de Villiers, no ball, SIX, de Villiers gets his century in style, this is the 2nd fastest hundred in World Cup history, de Villiers makes it 3 in 3 against West Indies in World Cups, it was length around off, de Villiers just launches it straight down the ground for another maximum, Holder overstepped as well on that occasion

de Villiers is on 99 now

47.1 - J Holder to de Villiers, FOUR, fuller in length and around off, de Villiers clears his front leg, gets under it and just lofts it to the long-on fence, the fielder was inside the circle

46.6 - A Russell to de Villiers, 1 run, run-out chance missed! It was angling away outside off, de Villiers mistimes the punch to the left of the bowler and sets off, the bowler was quick to move across to his left, grabs the ball, turns and fires in the throw at the non-striker's end. de Villiers was nowhere near the crease had Russell got a direct-hit, but he survives

46.5 - A Russell to Behardien, 1 run, just short of a good length and slightly wide outside off, Behardien punches it square of the wicket for a single

Farhaan Behardien, right handed bat, comes to the crease

46.4 - A Russell to D Miller, out Caught by Jerome Taylor!! That is a sensational catch from Taylor at the long-on boundary. The umpires check for the no-ball and then Taylor's foot, but it is all fine. It was a fullish delivery just around off, Miller goes for the loft, but doesn't get the desired distance. Taylor from long-on runs to his right, puts his right hand out and plucks the ball out of thin air. He managed to keep his feet away from the rope as well. That is just a superb piece of fielding, catch of the tournament so far. The celebrations were also not bad. Russell goes flat on the ground in front of Taylor's feet and Sammy doffed his cap twice to show his respect to Taylor, all in good fun. D Miller c Jerome Taylor b A Russell 20(16)

A Russell to D Miller, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

46.3 - A Russell to de Villiers, 1 run, very full and around off, de Villiers moves across and clips it to backward square leg for a run

46.2 - A Russell to de Villiers, FOUR, great improvisation from AB! It was full outside off, de Villiers shuffles across his sticks, kneels down and plays a one-handed sweep of sorts - just sensational stuff - to the fine leg fence for a boundary, the fielder was inside the circle

46.1 - A Russell to de Villiers, no run, great fielding from Russell, he angles this one across off, de Villiers goes hard, but mistimes the shot to the left of the bowler, who puts his left hand out and prevents the single

45.6 - J Holder to D Miller, 2 runs, in the airrr, but Gayle makes a mess of it! It was high full toss outside off, Miller goes hard at it, but ends up slicing it high. Gayle from cover runs back, but was never looking comfortable to take the catch, he dives, but the ball bounces away from him. Maybe, he was put off by Carter, who was also just behind him and was going for the catch as well. It could have been the sun as well, not sure about that

45.5 - J Holder to D Miller, 2 runs, yorker delivery outside off, Miller squeezes it out towards long-off and the batsmen take another couple there

45.5 - J Holder to D Miller, wide, very full but a little too wide this time around, wided by the umpire

45.4 - J Holder to D Miller, no run, yorker length delivery just inside the tramline, Miller reaches out, but can't connect this time

45.3 - J Holder to D Miller, 2 runs, low full toss wide outside off, Miller chases it and mistimes the push past the bowler, the batsmen take two because the ball went very slowly to the fielder at long-off

45.2 - J Holder to D Miller, 2 runs, full outside off, Miller reaches out and lofts it inside-out over extra cover, the batsmen take another couple before the sweeper runs across to his left and cuts it off

45.1 - J Holder to D Miller, 2 runs, full and slightly wide outside off, Miller reaches out and drives to the left of backward point, the batsmen had already set off for the single, the fielder dives to his left and makes a half-stop, the batsmen then take the second as the ball rolls away further from him, great running that

Jason Holder [7.0-2-29-1] is back into the attack

44.6 - A Russell to de Villiers, SIX, what a shot! He shuffles across, goes down on one knee and plays the scoop to perfection, the fielder at fine leg was inside the circle and even if he was at the rope, he would have seen it sailing into the crowd, where a gentleman takes a great catch

44.5 - A Russell to de Villiers, 2 runs, low full toss around off, de Villiers whips it towards deep mid-wicket and charges back for the second, the bowler is livid with his fielder there, but there's nothing he can do with de Villiers running like that

44.4 - A Russell to de Villiers, 2 runs, touch fuller this time and angles across off from round the wicket, de Villiers mistimes the heave towards deep mid-wicket, the ball didn't have much pace on it and the bastmen take a couple

43.5 - Benn to D Miller, no run, in the blockhole, Miller squeezes it out to cover

43.5 - Benn to D Miller, wide, down the leg-side, Miller fails to nurdle it fine, wided by the umpire

43.4 - Benn to D Miller, 2 runs, floated up on off and turning in towards Miller, who dances down the track and works it in front of mid-wicket, the fielder was at the rope and had to come a fair way in, giving the batsmen ample time to take the second

43.3 - Benn to de Villiers, 1 run, short and wide outside off, de Villiers rocks back and cuts it to sweeper cover

43.2 - Benn to de Villiers, FOUR, touch flatter and outside off, de Villiers shuffles across once again, bends on his knees and sweeps it airily towards the fine leg fence for back-to-back boundaries

43.1 - Benn to de Villiers, FOUR, another great shot from de Villiers, he shuffles across, kneels down and sweeps it past a diving short fine leg fielder, the ball runs away to the fence, this was the 9th four of his innings

42.6 - A Russell to D Miller, 2 runs, touch fuller and on off and middle, Miller works it through the mid-wicket region, the batsmen take another couple before the fielder in the deep runs across to his left and stops the ball

42.5 - A Russell to D Miller, no run, back of a length delivery angled across off, Miller hangs back and lines up for the pull, but he fails to connect as the ball goes under his bat

42.4 - A Russell to de Villiers, 1 run, low full toss around off, de Villiers clips it towards deep mid-wicket, can only get a single there

David Miller, left handed bat, comes to the crease

42.1 - A Russell to Rossouw, out Caught by Ramdin!! Rossouw perishes for the cause. Neverthless, it was a great innings as it provided the impetus for the hitting in the end overs. It was on a good length and around off, Rossouw backs away and looks to go big over covers, but gets a thick outside edge. Ramdin takes a simple catch to his left. This also ends the 134-run partnership between him and de Villiers. de Villiers pats him on the back as he walks past him. Rossouw c Ramdin b A Russell 61(39) [4s-6 6s-1]

A Russell to Rossouw, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

41.6 - Benn to Rossouw, 1 run, gives this one more air and around off, Rossouw backs away and cuts it towards point, who moves to his right and stops the ball, but can't prevent the single

41.5 - Benn to de Villiers, 1 run, shortish and outside off, de Villiers hangs back and cuts it to point, the batsmen take a quick single

41.4 - Benn to de Villiers, FOUR, floated up outside off, de Villiers goes down on one knee and sweeps it behind square, the ball runs away to the fence as there was no-one behind square in the deep on the on-side

41.1 - Benn to Rossouw, no run, flighted delivery outside off, Rossouw goes for the reverse paddle, but fails to connect, the keeper collects

de Villiers has scored 2 centuries in 2 World Cup games against West Indies prior to this game. Can he do it the third time?

Jerome Taylor [5.0-1-20-0] is back into the attack

Jerome Taylor will start the proceedings after the drinks break. He is currently having a chat with the umpire about the ball. West Indies have had some issues with the ball today.

Time for the second drinks break.

On a slightly controversial note, Ian Gould, one of the umpires for the match, didn't seem to be particularly happy with the condition of one of the balls and had a chat with the West Indies' captain, Holder. It has to be said that this is a rather abrasive surface and the ball will get scuffed up a bit.

It was Chris Gayle, who made the crucial breakthrough by snaring the wicket of du Plessis. Denesh Ramdin, the wicket-keeper, also deserves the credit for showing excellent reflexes to take the catch. To make it even better for the Windies, Gayle dismissed Amla, with the batsman finding himself plumb in front to be dismissed LBW. He is certainly a man with a golden arm. From South Africa's perspective, they need AB de Villiers to essay a captain's knock.

Here is Bharath Ramaraj's analysis of the last 18 overs: Sulieman Benn, the slow left-arm orthodox, followed up the fine efforts of West Indies' seamers by bowling tidily. He even induced the edge off Hashim Amla's bat, but Jason Holder perhaps missed a trick by not having a fielder stationed at first slip for Benn. As the Windies generally bowled with good control, for a brief period, Amla and Faf du Plessis struggled to free their arms and collect runs. However, Amla and du Plessis are world-class batsmen, and they were able to get through the difficult period and amass fifties. Du Plessis yet again showed his ability to use the depth of the crease and bisect the gaps in the field.

It looked dead as soon as the ball thudded into the pads. It was pushed through, skids on after pitching, Amla shuffles across and misses the nudge through the on-side, was struck right in front of middle stump. That is as plumb as you can get. Those two wickets has brought West Indies back into the game. Amla lbw b Gayle 65(88) [4s-1 6s-1]

There was a bit of extra bounce on that occasion, du Plessis made room and was looking to go over extra cover, gets a thickish outside edge and Ramdin snaffles it at chest height. For a second, no one really bothered to appeal, but umpire Davis raised his finger. In fact, the ball got stuck in the webbing of Ramdin's gloves. du Plessis c Ramdin b Gayle 62(70) [4s-3]

I don't know if we have to find some form. Leading up to this World Cup, we have played some great cricket. But, it tends to happen. World Cup is pressure moments and there is no escaping it, there is no hiding in the shadows. You lose one game and you are in the spotlight. So, won one, lost one, we need to win a couple to find our way into the quarters and then anything could happen. From those quarters, you are three games away from winning the trophy. So, I guess we just need to find some form with the bat, ball and in the field again. I do open the bowling. You are always kind of up against the opening batters. And he (Gayle) made 200 or something, a great knock. These days guys seem to knock off 200 quite easily. Somebody like him, I mean it's expected of somebody like him. He is a great batter, I think leading up to that knock, he hadn't made many runs. So, it's great to see him back in form. And I am up for the challenge. You always want to play against guys who are in form and he is certainly some guy who is in little bit of form.

The World Cup, this could be my last World Cup, I might not make the next one in four years time, I might be too old. So, I am going to kind of remember every moment and treasure it, if we can go all the way and win this one. It's crazy, close to 90,000 people I reckon, 89,000 of them were Indians. It's still a great place to play (talking about the previous game against India at the MCG). You are standing at the top of your mark and you can't even get to the captain's attention, who is only 5 metres away from you at mid-off. Great place to play cricket again, MCG. Also got great memories of that place. Just amazing atmosphere of that place again. Whether you win or lose, those are the moments I will remember for the rest of my life.

Steyn: Lovely place to come and play cricket. Boys enjoyed playing cricket here, fond memories even if we lose. Couple of years ago we won a series in Australia, exactly where Graeme walked out with a broken hand. So, great place to come and play cricket. I do remember it, I don't remember watching the game (referring to the 1992 World Cup semi-final against England). My cricket only started a couple of years later, but I remember kind of watching, that was kind of the first thing I remember about cricket, the 1992 World Cup. Jonty's run out of Inzamam, the 22 or 21 runs off 1 ball. I actually got Andrew Hudson's shirt the other day, felt the material and how things have changed. It's pretty amazing, this place holds so much history and again a great place to have a World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Loving it. I am really enjoying it. So, it's a great place to tour. We were here recently, we were in New Zealand before the World Cup. Australia is always a great place to visit. Sydney is a great city and kind of reminds me of Cape Town, with the ocean and everything.

Dale Steyn spoke to Mark Nicholas before the start of play today. We have his interview transcribed word to word. Here it is:

Drinks are on the field now.

Holder has certainly added a yard of pace and with his ability to extract bounce from a length, it makes him a bowler to watch out for. If he can get his front leg to snap down hard and point towards the wicket while delivering the ball, he may become a force to reckon with. At present, it seems to collapse at the point of the delivery and as a result, he isn't able to transfer the (kinetic) energy from his legs to the upper body and then to the ball.

Here is Bharath Ramaraj's analysis of the first 16 overs: The West Indies' seamers, Jason Holder and Jerome Taylor bowled with good disciplines upfront. Both of them produced seam movement off the deck and Holder also extracted disconcerting bounce from the surface. Interestingly, they looked to cramp the left-handed Quinton de Kock for room by bowling from around the wicket. After surviving a few nervous moments, the strategy worked as de Kock was dismissed by Holder. Hashim Amla too struggled with the delivery that nipped back off the seam.

de Villiers: "I think the credit has to go to the boys up front who set it up for us. After timing a few ball, got a bit of momentum behind me. Watch the ball is a very important thing to do. You need to know your weaknesses and strengths and play accordingly. I like reading the situations out there. I just sort of earn the right to go hard at the bowlers. I am very, very happy with tonight's performance."

AB de Villiers is the Man of the Match

After a disastrous performance against India at the MCG, South Africa have certainly bounced back in style. For the West Indies, after a promising start, they just completely lost the plot. Even their fielding was below par. South Africa will next take on Ireland in Canberra and the West Indies will meet India in a crucial encounter in Perth.

Sulieman Benn followed it up by bowling a fine spell, but Holder perhaps missed a trick by not having a first slip for Benn. It was Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis, who then stitched a crucial partnership to take South Africa to a position of strength. On occasions, both the batsmen struggled for timing, but showed the application to put on a century stand. Chris Gayle gave the Windies genuine hope of coming back into the game by snaring the wickets of Amla and du Plessis in a single over, but de Villiers' blitz shut the door on them.

It has to be remembered that Rilee Rossouw also played his part with an enterprising knock of 61. It was Rossouw, who looked to up the tempo with a slew of cracking strokes square of the wicket on either side. de Villiers looked to play himself in before he took over from Rossouw to produce a magnificent exhibition of stroke-play. Earlier, the West Indies' seamers, Jerome Taylor and Holder made a promising start by extracting seam movement and disconcerting bounce. In particular, Holder produced awkward bounce and took the wicket of Quinton de Kock. It was Holder's ability to cramp de Kock for room from around the wicket that led to his dismissal.

Amazingly, de Villiers took a mere 12 deliveries to move from 100 to 150. de Villiers' knock was the fastest 150 in the history of ODIs. He notched up the second fastest ton in World Cups. de Villiers has now scored three back-to-back hundreds against the West Indies in World Cups as well. South Africa's total of 408 for 5 was their highest score in World Cups.

Earlier, de Villiers' wondrously entertaining innings of 162 from just 66 balls took the game away from the grasp of the West Indies. de Villiers played every shot in the book to annihilate the opposition ranks. In fact, his sparkling spread of run-scoring was such that it is hard to pick a shot that encapsulated the breathtaking knock. He played crunching drives, slog sweeps, scoops and cuts to flay the West Indies' bowlers. One of the scoops he smashed for a four off Andre Russell's bowling was played with his top hand coming off the bat handle. In the 48th over of the innings, he also clobbered Holder for 34 runs. Unfortunately for Holder, he was smashed for 30 runs in the last over of the innings as well.

After AB de Villiers' believe-it-or-not masterpiece with the willow helped South Africa to amass a monstrous score on the board, West Indies collapsed in a heap to lose the match by a huge margin of 257 runs. It turned out to be their heaviest defeat in terms of runs in ODIs. West Indies' batsmen looked bereft of technique, especially while facing up to Imran Tahir's box of tricks and Tahir ended up with a five-wicket haul. Jason Holder played a rousing innings, but by then, it was all but over. The Windies camp will be shell-shocked after this defeat.

The South Africans are all smiles. The West Indian players come down and shake hands with the opposition.

Drinks are on the field now

Earlier, after Gayle was dismissed, Samuels survived a loud shout for LBW off Kyle Abbott's bowling, but surprisingly, South Africa didn't go for the review. The Hawk-Eye suggested that the ball was hitting the middle stump. However, Samuels didn't last long as he was dismissed by Abbott. Abbott also took the wicket of Gayle. Abbott's ability to bowl good lengths and hit the bat hard helped him to pick up wickets. On the other hand, West Indies' batsmen paid the price for hanging back in the crease. Interestingly, South Africa's seamers have looked to mix it up by bowling cross-seam to get the ball to skid off the surface under lights.

Here is Bharath Ramaraj's analysis of the first 16 overs: West Indies started their reply on a disastrous note by losing the wickets of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels. Jonathan Carter and Dwayne Smith, then were dismissed on the back of fine catches taken by AB de Villiers and David Miller. To make it worse for them, Lendl Simmons' wicket was taken by Imran Tahir as West Indies found themselves in dire straits. On replays it was clear that Simmons had edged it and shouldn't have been given out LBW, but he didn't take the review.
