At one stage, South Africa were 134/6, but a fighting fifty from Behardien - his highest score in ODIs, alongside Philander added 54 runs for the 7th wicket. He perished while trying to up the ante. The rest of the tail fluttered away and the hosts were rolled over for 204 - their lowest completed score at Potchefstroom while batting first. New Zealand should be happy with their effort with the ball. South Africa opted to bat after AB won the toss. However, things didn't go according to plan. The pitch was slow and the Kiwi bowlers were disciplined. Amla and van Wyk went in quick succession to leave the hosts tottering at 20/2. AB and Rossouw steadied the innings with a 48-run stand, but the latter fell playing an ambitious loft. Miller didn't last long and was soon followed by AB.

Guptill: "Mainly while fielding, but no problems while batting (talking about his injured wrist). We were lucky with the way me and Tommy (Latham) got away at the top there. It was an up and down surface, we had to work a lot harder for the runs. I have been batting well in T20s and managed to bat through today."
Martin Guptill is the Man of the Match for his unbeaten 103 and effecting two run-outs.
Williamson: "To see the way boys adapted to the slow wicket was outstanding. The slower bowlers were tough to play. Everyone played their roles to perfection. It was a different surface to what we thought, but we knew what kind of wicket it was after 3 or 4 overs. Martin (Guptill) and Tom's (Latham) stand was crucial. The most pleasing thing was to learn the things from the first innings and know which are the areas you can score. It is exciting going into the last game with the series in the balance."
AB de Villiers: "We just didn't rock up, pretty disappointing. I don't think we had enough runs on the board. We came out with a positive mindset while fielding, but we didn't have the runs. Credit to New Zealand. We couldn't kick on in the end and we were 50 runs short. I would have probably bowled first after having had a look at the wicket. We will definitely assess again. We don't want to lose the series. Always seen what he (Behardien) is capable of in the domestic level and now he is showing it in international level."
Earlier, South African batsmen failed to tackle the slowness of the pitch as they skittled out to a modest total. Had it not been for the 54-run stand between Behardien and Philander, the hosts would have found themselves in a dreadful position. The Proteas innings was led by Behardien who was ably supported by Rossouw, de Villiers and Philander (all three batsmen scored in excess of 30). New Zealand bowlers were disciplined, their fielders were lively too.
The opening pair batted sensibly and took no-risks at any stage. Both batsmen clobbered the bad balls to all sides of the corner. Latham recorded a well-compiled fifty while Guptill notched up a hard-earned century with his brilliant stroke play (also his highest ODI score against South Africa). Barring Philander, none of the South African bowlers were able to exert pressure on the Kiwi batsmen. Tahir consumed Latham on 64 while his partner Phangiso claimed the New Zealand skipper. Guptill, joined by the debutant George Worker steered New Zealand home with 33 balls to spare.
New Zealand openers played with good purpose from the word go as they employed the play-the-ball according-to-the-merit theory to perfection. They were also aided by poor fielding and bowling from the Proteas. Nearly four catches were dropped and to aggravate matters, their bowling lacked control.
