Leicester have won the EPL. There is no reason why Punjab cannot bounce back and get themselves out of the mire. They were outstanding in their previous match against Gujarat and today, after being pushed to the corner, they did well to restrict KOL to 164. Who won't want them to do well? There is nothing more beautiful than the underdogs toppling the giants. Let cricket be also called the 'beautiful game', at least once in a while.

Russell: "Of course, we have to respect that they executed the yorkers very well. The credit goes to the bowlers. The grass patches are full, so if you tend to bowl full, you will be smashed. We will try and take early wickets to restrict them."

Once the platform was laid, it was up to the duo of Yusuf and Russell to provide the fireworks. However, they lost gas towards the end, courtesy of some terrific death bowling by Punjab's bowlers. KOL will feel confident about defending the score on this track and leapfrog GUJ to top the points table. But will PUN have different ideas? Stick around for the chase.

On a spinning track, Kolkata will feel pretty happy to have managed 164 runs on the board. Gambhir and Uthappa started off on a cautious note and took the team past the fifty-run mark in the eighth over without making much fuss. Their fifth 50-plus stand of the season. With singles and twos freely coming, the pair milked the bowlers and collected runs without going for big shots. After reaching his fifty, Gambhir threw his wicket attempting a needles run. Uthappa followed soon after cracking an enterprising half-century.

A Russell 16(10) Y Pathan 19(16) Sandeep Sharma 4-0-25-0

19.6 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, out A Russell Run Out!! What a finish to the innings for Punjab. Bowled this slower delivery down the leg seeing Russell make room, he got a faint tickle of the pad to the keeper. Wanted to sneak in an extra run but the keeper threw in time to Sandeep, who outran Russell at the bowler's end. Talk about the shift of momentum. A Russell run out (W Saha/Sandeep Sharma) 16(10) [4s-1 6s-1]

Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

19.5 - Sandeep Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, not telling you about the delivery, read the previous balls. Pathan swings off the toe towards mid-wicket

19.4 - Sandeep Sharma to Y Pathan, no run, cherry on the cake. A dot ball. What can Pathan do? Another yorker and Pathan jams it back to the bowler

19.3 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, 1 run, this is unbelievable work from Sandeep. Another yorker, Russell jams towards cover

19.2 - Sandeep Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, no respite from the yorkers, another one. Pathan gives it all but cannot beat long-on, hit it straight to him

19.1 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, 1 run, Sandeep comes round the wicket and round-arms the yorker right on the toes of Russell. Almost got the better of him, Russell jams it into the pitch for a single

A Russell 14(7) Y Pathan 17(13) Mohit Sharma 4-0-39-0

18.6 - Mohit Sharma to A Russell, 1 run, Mohit is back to normal. Yorker on the stumps, Russell clears his front leg and cracks it off the base of the bat to long-off

18.5 - Mohit Sharma to A Russell, SIX, Mohit missed it by a whisker and that is all Russell wanted. Thumps the full toss well over the long-on fence, did not look like a well-timed hit though

18.4 - Mohit Sharma to A Russell, no run, yorker outside off, Russell cannot reach with an attempted squeeze

18.3 - Mohit Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, Pathan dances down the track again, succeeds in making it a full toss, cannot do much with the shot though, hits it towards long-off

18.2 - Mohit Sharma to A Russell, 1 run, another yorker. Everything has been full for a while now, Russell cracks it hard, but straight to the fielder at long-off

18.1 - Mohit Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, Pathan uses his feet and gets across to tackle the line of the delivery. It was too full and all Pathan could do was drill to long-off, of the toe again

Y Pathan 15(11) A Russell 6(3) Sandeep Sharma 3-0-21-0

17.6 - Sandeep Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, Pathan tries to manufacture his own room, Sharma follows him with a yorker length delivery again. Mistimes the swing wide of long-on

17.5 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, 1 run, Sharma gets the yorker right again. Russell drills it down the ground off the toe of the bat, long-off cuts it across

17.4 - Sandeep Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, yorker length again, Pathan cannot do much but jam it towards the cover region

17.3 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, 1 run, finally the delivery he was looking for. Yorker on the stumps, Russell jams it towards backward square leg

17.2 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, FOUR, Sharma went round the wicket and angled it across Russell. The ploy worked a bit but for the third man inside the ring, the thick edge flies over the fielder there

17.2 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, wide, on the previous ball Sharma was seen grousing with the umpire. He thought it was too close a call. Not this time though, well beyond the reach of Russell, called a wide

17.2 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, wide, another slower delivery in the same area. The umpire has to repeat the action

17.2 - Sandeep Sharma to A Russell, wide, tried to act too smart and has to pay the price. Very full but well outside off, called a wide

17.1 - Sandeep Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, this is better from Sharma, not bowling into Pathan's arc. Keeps it full and wide, Pathan squeezes the drive to sweeper cover

16.6 - Mohit Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, Pathan swings and does not time this slower ball, fetches a single to deep backward square leg anyway

Andre Russell, right handed bat, comes to the crease

16.5 - Mohit Sharma to Y Pathan, out Uthappa Run Out!! What was Uthappa thinking? It was right on the pitch and Sharma had the momentum of his followthrough with him. He was always going to reach this drop from Pathan earlier than Uthappa. Has to depart. Slower ball it was and Pathan swung, missed and got hit on the abdomen, the ball just dropped and Uthappa set off. Pathan did not oblige, it was too late before he could hear the call. Sharma had all three to aim at the bowler's end and he broke them with ease. Uthappa run out (Mohit Sharma) 70(49) [4s-6 6s-2]

Mohit Sharma to Y Pathan, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

16.4 - Mohit Sharma to Uthappa, 1 run, better from Sharma, slower full toss on the stumps. Uthappa drills it to long-on for a single

16.3 - Mohit Sharma to Y Pathan, 1 run, swings again. Failed to get underneath the ball this time, finds deep mid-wicket

16.2 - Mohit Sharma to Y Pathan, SIX, fullish ball and to Pathan's liking. He swings across and dispatches it over the deep backward square leg fence

16.1 - Mohit Sharma to Uthappa, 1 run, back of a length delivery on the stumps. Did not look like a slower one, Uthappa had to wait as he whipped it to deep mid-wicket

15.5 - Axar to Y Pathan, 1 run, fires this one on the pads of Pathan, he softly tucks it to short fine leg

15.4 - Axar to Uthappa, 1 run, Patel goes full and deprives Uthappa of the length he was looking for, patted in front of extra cover for a single

15.3 - Axar to Uthappa, 2 runs, short, really short for Uthappa to effect the pull. He does so, cannot beat the fielder in the deep and will have to be content with a couple

15.2 - Axar to Y Pathan, 1 run, Pathan stays leg-side, softly tucks to mid-wicket for a single

15.1 - Axar to Uthappa, 1 run, makes room and tries to swing across the line, gets it off the inside edge to mid-wicket

14.4 - Swapnil Singh to Uthappa, SIX, flatter than a pancake! Grounds his back knee and slogs this one wide of long-on, the ball just carried over the fence

14.3 - Swapnil Singh to Y Pathan, 1 run, this one was slightly slower through the air, Pathan pats in front of cover

14.2 - Swapnil Singh to Uthappa, 1 run, shortish ball on the stumps, Uthappa pulls and finds deep mid-wicket

Uthappa 52(39) Y Pathan 0(0) Sandeep Sharma 2-0-9-0

13.6 - Sandeep Sharma to Uthappa, 2 runs, he has been put down at long-off. Was in the air for a while but the two fielders converging near the fence made a mess of it. Uthappa swung across and got it off the toe of the bat. Miller was the other fielder running in from long-on, it was his catch. Neither called and the confusion led to Mohit Sharma dropping the catch

13.5 - Sandeep Sharma to Uthappa, FOUR, what a shot to bring his fifty. Cracks a full toss over extra cover and fetches a four

13.4 - Sandeep Sharma to Uthappa, no run, full ball again, drives it back to the bowler. It hit the stumps at the bowler's end, had the bowler got his hand to it, Pathan who was out of his crease, would have been a goner

Yusuf Pathan, right handed bat, comes to the crease

13.3 - Sandeep Sharma to Uthappa, out Gambhir Run Out!! Should Punjab really be celebrating this wicket? It is like light infantry making way for a heavy battalion. Sharma came over the wicket and kept it on a length outside off, Uthappa drove towards Maxwell at extra cover. Gambhir was backing a long way. Maxwell took his time and threw at the bowler's end, the throw deflected off the bowler's hand onto the stumps. Easy one for the third umpire as Gauti was long way out of his crease. Gambhir run out (Maxwell/Sandeep Sharma) 54(45) [4s-6 6s-1]

Sandeep Sharma to Uthappa, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

They have gone upstairs. I think Gambhir is gone here, he is nowhere in the frame. What are they waiting for? Out it is!

13.2 - Sandeep Sharma to Gambhir, 1 run, another fullish delivery angled into Gambhir. He cleared his front leg and swung it to deep mid-wicket for a single

13.1 - Sandeep Sharma to Gambhir, no run, round the wicket comes Sharma and keeps it full well outside off. Luckily got away, could have been a wide

12.6 - Maxwell to Gambhir, 1 run, looked to drive with the turn, but Maxwell had slid this through. Catches a thick inside edge and the ball wanders through mid-wicket

12.5 - Maxwell to Gambhir, FOUR, oh supremely engineered. Goes back in the crease to a shortish ball outside off, and then deliberately slices it past backward point to bring up fifty. The skipper keeps churning them up

12.4 - Maxwell to Uthappa, 1 run, rifles it on leg-stump, and restricts Robbie to a clip through mid-wicket

12.3 - Maxwell to Uthappa, FOUR, this time he goes with the turn. Flatter trajectory this time and it's been heaved over mid-wicket with a clean swish

12.2 - Maxwell to Uthappa, no run, drifts this across the right-hander, but the ball lands very full. Uthappa nails the drive straight to cover

12.1 - Maxwell to Gambhir, 1 run, tosses it up from round the wicket and extracts some turn, Gambhir uses it and slices it in front of backward point

Gambhir 47(40) Uthappa 41(32) Axar 3-0-18-0

11.6 - Axar to Gambhir, 1 run, powers a flat-batted thump down to long-off. Typical Axar delivery this, with the ball being darted short and wide

11.5 - Axar to Uthappa, leg byes, 1 run, darts it in on the pads like a pop-gun, Uthappa is late to get his bat across on the flick but picks a leg-bye nevertheless

11.4 - Axar to Gambhir, 1 run, this time he does get the single to long-on

11.3 - Axar to Gambhir, no run, fired in full and Gambhir can't get it down to long-on as Axar stops it

11.2 - Axar to Gambhir, 2 runs, I am not keeping count, but Gambhir has already missed out on a bevy of half-trackers. At least, this time he gets a couple of runs for it. He pulled it backward of square, hit it hard but Vohra skated across and dived to cut it off

10.5 - Stoinis to Gambhir, 1 run, goes hard on the drive and mistimes it through the covers

10.4 - Stoinis to Uthappa, 1 run, nips back in from a good length and strikes the pad leading to a muffled appeal. Muffled because Stoinis soon realized that there was an inside edge involved. Easy single as the ball dribbles into the off-side

10.3 - Stoinis to Gambhir, 1 run, slower short of length delivery around middle, Gambhir tucks it from in front of his rib-cage through mid-wicket

10.2 - Stoinis to Uthappa, 1 run, pounds it in short and Uthappa is ready. Swivels across and pulls it to deep backward square

10.1 - Stoinis to Uthappa, FOUR, oh jeez, some mind numbing garbage lately from the bowlers. Stoinis tries a dipping slow full toss, but dishes it on the pads. Uthappa can't be more thankful. Flogs it behind square

9.6 - Swapnil Singh to Gambhir, SIX, hallelujah! This is a holy gift. High full toss on middle and Gambhir swings it over the square leg fence

9.5 - Swapnil Singh to Gambhir, 2 runs, it's another half-tracker but it's a leg-break this time from Swapnil. It turns away well wide of off, nearly goes outside the pitch before Gambhir flat-bats it in the air. Drops short of long-off

9.4 - Swapnil Singh to Uthappa, 1 run, gently drives one to the right of Maxwell at cover and hares to the other end

9.3 - Swapnil Singh to Gambhir, 1 run, ventures out of the crease, couldn't cover much ground as the ball was fired in full, drives it to long-off

9.2 - Swapnil Singh to Uthappa, 1 run, eases onto the back foot, and pushes it through the covers

9.1 - Swapnil Singh to Gambhir, 1 run, shoddy half-tracker which Gambhir fails to cash in on. Pulls it straight to deep mid-wicket

Swapnil Singh [1.0-0-3-0] is back into the attack

Strategic time-out has been enforced. It's all set up very nicely for the KOL. Plus there has been reasonable turn which plays out nicely with the hosts playing 3 spinners..

8.5 - Axar to Uthappa, 2 runs, smart batting this. And more than that, it's impressive running. The chemistry between these two has been brilliant right from the start. Uthappa once again works it wide of long-on and springs back easily

8.4 - Axar to Uthappa, no run, slices a punch straight to backward point

8.3 - Axar to Uthappa, 2 runs, it's too straight and too full to be worrying about playing across the line, Axar doesn't turn it much either, flicked through mid-wicket and they scamper a couple

8.2 - Axar to Uthappa, no run, softly played, looking to steal a single to long-off, but extra-cover intercepts

8.1 - Axar to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir tries to emulate his partner with the slog-sweep but can't find the same brutality as he chops it off a thick bottom edge to deep mid-wicket

7.5 - Gurkeerat Singh to Gambhir, 1 run, nice flight and in-dip from round the wicket, Gambhir though, draws on it and nudges it through square leg

7.4 - Gurkeerat Singh to Uthappa, 1 run, there he comes. Told you it wasn't far. But he mistimes the loft and is lucky that the ball didn't carry to long-on who does ever so well to gather it cleanly while being on the move

7.3 - Gurkeerat Singh to Uthappa, no run, Uthappa wants to lace a cut past backward point but he can only chop it straight to him

The fielder gets in a straight line with both sets of stumps, and might have deliberately chosen to go at the other end where Gauti was strolling. Manages a direct-hit too, but Gambhir is in

2.1 - Stoinis to Uthappa, 1 run, softly drops a ball in front of Maxi at backward point and judges the single well. The throw is a powerful one but off target. Replays from the side show that Uthappa wasn't in his crease when the ball passed the stumps, but that's more down to the fact that Uthappa knew where it was going and then had to take slight evasive action. 0.6 - Sandeep Sharma to Gambhir, 1 run, how close was it? Maxwell has his hands on his head but I reckon his reaction is misleading. I think Uthappa would have been home. Back of a length delivery just outside off, Gambhir drops it with soft hands in front of backward point and sets off. Maxwell swoops in and tries to side-foot it onto the stumps but misses

0.4 - Sandeep Sharma to Gambhir, no run, hops down the track, steps to leg as well trying to open up the off-side. But it's too close to slash it away, Gambhir can only chop it towards cover-point

PUN gave away 14 runs and claimed one wicket in the final 2 overs. If you'd thought that was brilliant, then it's worth looking at KOL's bowling scorecard too. The 2-time T20 League champs bettered it by conceding the same number of runs and consuming 3 wickets. Some eye-pleasing exhibition of death bowling I must admit. Let's name this a HUM-JOLahoreY-DINGER. T20 cricket is not all about crash-bang-wallop. Bowlers, you can hold your heads high and dictate the terms (Ask Russell and Sandeep Sharma). That's a wrap of Wednesday night. Hope you enjoyed our coverage as much as we did bringing it to you. Till tomorrow, keep safe and sleep tight. Goodbye from Raju Peethala, Abhishek Chaudhary and Sagar Chawla. A ta-ta from scorer Venkatesh too. Thanks for reading fellas!

"I love playing here. It's been amazing. We know how important this game is. We didn't get enough on the board but we came back and bowled like champions. We proved ourselves and that's what a good team is all about. We were trying to get to 180, but credit to their bowlers, they did well during death overs. 164 was very defendable and once we know we can create pressure we can get wickets. We have a few days off, We gonna rest and make sure we are ready for the next game," huffs out Andre Russell who seemed to have soaked in the moments of the game. Is also the proud owner of Purple Cap...Now you know who the Man of the Match is

"We are used to this wicket. The way we have batted is very professional. I still thought we were 10 runs short but the ball did slow a bit in the second innings. From hereon, we must get used to it and get better. The wickets up front were very important. The middle order has been in decent form and hopefully they can take some pressure off us. Last year's experience was a big learning for us. We are not taking any game for granted," grins an exuberant Gambhir.

Vijay: "To be honest we did not start well and for Maxi to pull off a knock like that was unbelievable. Axar got out at the wrong time. Lot of positives to take for us. We are bowling really well and the bowlers were up to the mark. Sandeep and Mohit were brilliant at the death. We needed to have a good start, but Maxi played well. The momentum is with us. It is a great game to be part of. We are just looking forward to the games coming up for us. Everybody wants to win and we wanted to go and get the 160. We are keeping it simple. Hashim Amla came today morning, so we thought we will give him a break and make use of him in the future games."

KOL's bowlers showed resolve and determination to enable them to a thrilling victory. The visitors started off on a poor note and were in a spot of bother at 13/3, but Maxwell and Saha resurrected the innings and steadied the chase. Maxwell unfurled a series of powerful shots and never allowed the required rate to climb at any point during the chase. Just when Punjab were coasting towards the target, KOL bowlers clawed their way back into the game by snaring a couple of wickets. The spin duo of Piyush Chawla and Shakib Al Hasan tied the batsmen in knots to take the game away from PUN's grasp. But it was the 17th over which changed the complexion of the game, Axar Patel hammered two sixes and kept Punjab in the hunt. With 12 needed off the last over, Andre Russell held his nerve and successfully nailed the yorkers to help KOL romp home in the end.

1.6 - M Morkel to Vijay, FOUR, it's sheer luck that has fetched Vijay a four here. Back of a length delivery angled into him, he made a bit of room and then tried to flog it over deep mid-wicket, got a thick top edge that flew over short fine leg, one bounce and over the ropes

1.5 - M Morkel to Vijay, no run, Vijay is trying too much perhaps. Used his feet this time and swung across the length delivery, connect but could not find gap through mid-wicket

1.4 - M Morkel to Vijay, no run, kisses length just outside off, Vijay stays in the crease and pushes towards cover

1.3 - M Morkel to Vijay, no run, the kind of behind bounce this delivery had, Vijay would have needed a ladder to play the punch he attempted. Back of a length delivery outside off, Vijay does not connect with the punch

1.3 - M Morkel to Vijay, wide, angled this one too much and will be called a wide down the leg-side

1.2 - M Morkel to Vijay, no run, hits the back of a length again, the ball hurries off the surface too. Vijay gets across and pushes it back to the bowler

1.1 - M Morkel to Vijay, no run, back of a length delivery with the bounce of a short one. Vijay stands tall and punches to backward point

Morne Morkel, right-arm fast, comes into the attack

Manan Vohra, right handed bat, comes to the crease

0.4 - A Russell to Stoinis, out Caught by Chawla!! This is not how you chase a target - losing a wicket on the 4th delivery of the innings. Nothing shot from Stoinis. Length delivery around off, he threw his bat at it, had no timing behind it. The ball spooned towards Piyush Chawla at mid-off, who accepted the gift gleefully. Stoinis c Chawla b A Russell 0(3)

A Russell to Stoinis, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

0.3 - A Russell to Stoinis, no run, similar delivery outside off this time. Stoinis pats towards cover, signals Vijay to stop, who looked interested in a single
