Broad: "It is pretty unbelievable. It has not sunk in. All the talk was about us and how we play in this game. Yes, we won the toss, but we still had to bowl well. The catching was excellent. Stokes' catch was unbelievable. It is one of those things that you can't think about (on him being one short of 300 wickets). But before going to bed last night, I thought to get it out of the way quickly. I am not sure we will get too much sunshine today. So, we have to graft hard and we have the batters who are brought up in these conditions. Cook is the best man to do it."

We will be back for the England reply soon. They will have around 3 overs to bat before lunch. Before we take a minute's break, we have the man of the moment - Broad's interview. Enjoy!

A final word on the English catching. Whatever went to hand they caught and I can't remember a single half-chance put down. A couple of times the ball dropped short of the slip cordon but their pouching today was first-class. Cook too displayed great attacking captaincy by posting six slips when he knew that Broad was on fire. Australia need to come out with all guns blazing and hope for a similar bowling effort - mind you the Ashes is fast slipping away from their grasp

It will take some time for this batting performance by Australia to sink in. Apart from Warner and to an extent Nevill who got good ones the others pretty much were at sea against the moving ball. Yes the pitch did something but it was never a 60 all-out pitch. Broad bowled unchanged and finished with career-best figures. Didn't need much support from the other end but Wood and Finn did their parts well too

14 extras were the highest scorer in the innings. Mitch Johnson was the next best with 13. Pretty much sums up the Aussie innings. The innings was over in 94 minutes to be exact. In 18.3 overs. Broad with 8/15 including his 300th Test wicket. He tried so hard to get it at Edgbaston but couldn't. Today off his third ball he got it, dismissing Rogers. Then the Aussie procession started. It was insane Test cricket and England have just blown Australia away

18.3 - Broad to Lyon, out Caught by Stokes!! Australia rolled over for 60! Anderson claps with a smile on his face. Broad finishes with 8/15. On his home ground. He is walking off with ball in hand, waving it to all parts of TB. Andrew Strauss suited and booted is there as well. Another back of a length delivery outside off, Lyon pushes with hard hands (do I need to say it again?) and the edge carries to Stokes at 6th slip. Easy grab and that is all over for the Aussies in the first innings. Broad leads the side off the field. Lyon c Stokes b Broad 9(20) [4s-2]

Broad to Lyon, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

18.2 - Broad to Lyon, FOUR, full outside off, Lyon throws his bat on the drive and then watches the thick edge fly over the slip cordon. Good that he went hard for it ensured that the edge didn't carry

18.1 - Broad to Lyon, no run, way outside off, easy leave

Hazlewood 4(15) Lyon 5(17) Finn 6-0-21-1

17.6 - Finn to Hazlewood, no run, back of a length on the stumps, Hazlewood goes deep in the crease and defends to cover

17.6 - Finn to Lyon, no ball, 1 run, tucked off the hips to fine leg, for a single. Finn has overstepped

17.5 - Finn to Lyon, no run, too high and Aleem Dar shakes his head. Full and nipping in, Lyon shuffles across and misses the flick. Is struck on the thigh pad. Would've gone down too. Cook doesn't review

These two tailenders are showing more determination and stickability than the top and middle order showed in their innings

17.4 - Finn to Lyon, no run, back of a length outside off, Lyon pulls his bat inside the line once more to leave

17.3 - Finn to Lyon, no run, short outside off, rising, Lyon tucks his bat inside the line to let it go

17.2 - Finn to Lyon, no run, wide of the crease and another outswinger on a fuller length outside off, Lyon shoulders arms

Hazlewood 4(14) Lyon 4(11) Broad 9-5-11-7

16.6 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, wry smiles from both Broad and Hazlewood. Angled in and was hitting the stumps, but the bounce takes it over the edge of the bat and the stumps. Broad gets a second maiden in a row but he still can't get Hazlewood out

16.5 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, Hazlewood is beaten on the back foot punch. Short and rising outside off, Hazlewood's forceful shot didn't make contact

16.4 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, still the line is outside off, Hazlewood tucks the bat inside the line of the ball and lets it go

Third man brought in on the off-side. The man on the off-side goes to mid-on

16.3 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, outside off, left alone

16.2 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, sharply rising delivery outside off, Hazlewood was surprised by the bounce on that, tried to fend and then realised it was too big for him, Buttler collects

16.1 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, angled in on the stumps, Hazlewood backs away slightly and defends, the sixth slip runs around and collects

15.6 - Finn to Lyon, no run, back of a length outside off, Lyon hops and defends to cover

15.5 - Finn to Lyon, no run, back of a length down leg, Lyon flicks and misses. A rare off-target delivery from the Englishmen today

15.4 - Finn to Lyon, no run, short of length on the stumps, turned to short leg

15.3 - Finn to Lyon, FOUR, pitched up on off stump, Lyon gets forward and lofts it back over the bowler's head. It is a tease for Broad from mid-off and he can't get there. Nice looking shot from Lyon there as he held the pose after playing that. The key was he was looking to play straight

Six slips and a short leg in

15.2 - Finn to Lyon, no run, back of a length outside off, Lyon now plays at that and pushes out, the seam movement beats the bat

15.1 - Finn to Lyon, no run, short of length outside off, rising outside off, Lyon plays inside the line and lets it go. Dropped his hands quickly too

14.6 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, pitched up outside off, Hazlewood leaves that alone, a maiden over from Broad but he would've wanted an eighth one there

14.5 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, back of a length outside off, Hazlewood plays inside the line of that and the ball goes well wide of the bat, didn't threaten the stumps too

Clarke is seen chewing his gum ferociously

14.4 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, pitched up outside off, Hazlewood drives and gets a big inside edge to the left of the bowler

14.3 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, in the corridor of uncertainty again, this time Hazlewood lets it go

14.2 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, loose from Hazlewood. Very full and outside off, should've been left alone but Hazlewood drives and misses, went for the square drive and didn't connect

14.1 - Broad to Hazlewood, no run, pitched up outside off, from round the wicket, Hazlewood is showing all his three stumps, pushes limply and is beaten. Not far from the edge

13.6 - Finn to Lyon, no run, short of length on the stumps, Lyon pushes it wide of short leg and looks for the quick single, Hazlewood isn't interested

13.5 - Finn to Lyon, no run, just short of Stokes at fifth slip. The edge was found as Lyon hung his bat out at a back of a length delivery outside off, but it died down to the left of the diving Ben Stokes. He tried to clasp it but just a couple of inches short

13.4 - Finn to Lyon, no run, full and the outswinger outside off, Lyon gets forward and then shoulders arms extravagantly

13.3 - Finn to Lyon, no run, full and down leg, Lyon flicks and misses

13.2 - Finn to Lyon, no run, short of length outside off, Lyon pulls his bat inside the line and lets it go. Lots of ooh and aahs from behind the wicket

13.1 - Finn to Hazlewood, 3 runs, ironic cheers around TB. Boof Lehmann won't like that as he watches it all in. "Sarcasm at its naughtiest" says Mikey Holding on air. Described it beautifully. Full and swinging in, flicked through mid-wicket and they take three. Then the crowd stand up and clap for a good 10-15 seconds. Even the Aussies in the ground with their flags applaud sarcastically. Brilliant humor from the crowd

Nathan Lyon, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Johnson 13(25) Hazlewood 1(1) Broad 7-3-11-7

12.6 - Broad to Johnson, out Caught by Root!! Another. Nine down. Johnson does the same thing as Starc, back of a length outside off, seamed away, Johnson followed it and it hit the bat splice before safely landing in Root's hands at third slip. He is all smiles and does a double thumbs up to his mates. Broad too sports a big grin on his face. Johnson tried to defend that but the movement and the bounce took the edge. Johnson c Root b Broad 13(25) [4s-2]

Broad to Johnson, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

12.5 - Broad to Hazlewood, 1 run, Hazlewood pushes that in the gap at point and gets off the mark with the single. The point region is vacant

Josh Hazlewood, left handed bat, comes to the crease

12.4 - Broad to Starc, out Caught by Root!! Very poor from Starc too. These Aussies aren't learning at all. Going with hard hands at deliveries that should be left alone. Full outside off, Starc pushes well away from the body and gets a thick edge on the drive, carries to Root at third slip around stomach height. They check for the no-ball but Broad is fine. Starc c Root b Broad 1(8)

Broad to Starc, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

12.3 - Broad to Starc, no run, full and on the stumps, draws a thick outside edge as Starc came forward to defend, the ball rolls to the left of sixth slip where Lyth makes a fine diving stop. Saved some runs

Still the six slips stay

12.2 - Broad to Starc, no run, angled in on the stumps, pushed to mid-on

12.1 - Broad to Starc, no run, back of a length outside off, Starc defends to cover

Over: 12 0 4 0 0 4 0 AUS 46/7
Johnson 13(24) Starc 1(4) Finn 3-0-12-1

11.6 - Finn to Johnson, no run, that has shot across to Buttler. Pitched on a good length and nips back in extravagantly, misses the bat and pad and flies over the stumps. Buttler does well to leap and grab that to his right with both hands. That went off from a length. Johnson wears a tough expression on his face

11.5 - Finn to Johnson, FOUR, streaky but four. On a back of a length and outside off, Johnson punches and gets it through the vacant gully and backward point area. Was in the air but went in the gap. Finn has his hands on his head

11.4 - Finn to Johnson, no run, short of length on the stumps, Johnson stands tall and blocks

11.3 - Finn to Johnson, no run, nips back in and towards the thigh pad, Johnson misses the flick and it runs off the pads towards the vacant short leg area

11.2 - Finn to Johnson, FOUR, hard push but wide of the diving fifth slip. Full and Johnson played it down, getting it wide of the left-hand of the slip fielder. There is no third man and a boundary for Johnson and Australia - which will be much appreciated

11.1 - Finn to Johnson, no run, Johnson is beaten! Full and angled across Johnson, he felt for it and was beaten all ends up. The feet were rooted to the crease that time

Perhaps one could sympathise with him and say that he didn't expect such a dreadful start but he never looked at ease at the crease. Is a great career ending? After the start that the Aussie have had, it would take a miracle to save the Ashes now

And that will be drinks. Blimey! What an hour of Test cricket that was. Australia seven down after one hour. Michael Clarke and Co. have some explaining to do. Apart from Warner and perhaps Nevill the others played poor shots to get out. The worst came from the skipper who flashed at a wide delivery. Shows his mental state at the moment. He was nervous at the toss and he carried that into his batting

Six slips in now. Yes six!

10.5 - Broad to Johnson, leg byes, 1 run, down leg, catches the thigh pad and evades Buttler's dive, they take a leg bye

10.4 - Broad to Johnson, no run, short of length outside off, left alone

10.3 - Broad to Johnson, no run, Johnson shoulders arms to one that isn't far away from off stump, bounce and it didn't seam back in enough to hit off

10.2 - Broad to Johnson, no run, short of length on the stumps, solidly defended by Johnson

10.1 - Broad to Johnson, 2 runs, full and swinging in, clipped in the air but over Moeen Ali at square leg. They are happy with two

A 19-ball fifer for Broad. It is the joint-quickest fifer in Tests after Ernie Toshack's similar effort in 1947 against India. Also Broad becomes the fifth Englishman to get to 300 Test scalps. He joins Fred Trueman, Sir Ian Botham, Bob Willis and Jimmy Anderson in the elite list. Took me so long to put this up - shows what an hour of Test cricket we have had

9.5 - Finn to Starc, 1 run, short of length on the stumps, Starc defends it square of the wicket, in the vacant point region, gets an easy single

9.4 - Finn to Starc, no run, now this delivery nips back in and catches Starc on the thigh pad, that would've stung. Luckily Starc is wearing some protection

9.3 - Finn to Starc, no run, loose from Starc, angled across on a back of a length outside off, Starc pushed out limply and was lucky not to have edged it

9.2 - Finn to Nevill, out Bowled!! Seven down now. The sorry tale of the Aussie innings continues. Nevill is half-forward, unsure of his footwork, wanted to come forward but didn't, left a tiny bat-pad gap for the ball to sneak through. 6.4 - Broad to Johnson, no run, targetting off stump, Johnson defends with soft hands back down the wicket

Shades of Cape Town 2011 when Australia were 21/9 and then were bowled out for 47. Lots of glum faces in the Aussie dressing room. One just saw Boof Lehmann go in

6.1 - Broad to Clarke, out Caught by Cook!! Poor from Clarke and Broad gets five. Will confirm whether this is the joint quickest fifer in Tests. Full and well wide of off, Clarke went for a big drive and got an edge, good catch by Cook as he leapt and took it with both hands. The ball was travelling and he clasped it above his head, keeping his eyes on the ball till the last moment. Must say dreadful batting from Clarke though. Clarke c Cook b Broad 10(15) [4s-2]

A leg-slip in for Nevill

5.4 - Mark Wood to Clarke, no ball, 1 run, short of length on the stumps, Clarke turns it towards the vacant mid-on region. Also Mark Wood has overstepped

5.2 - Mark Wood to Clarke, FOUR, nice shot. This short delivery was rising around chest-height and Clarke swivelled on the pull and got it over square leg which is vacant. More of the splice of the bat but that will do

5.1 - Mark Wood to Clarke, no run, back of a length outside off, Clarke punches to cover off the back foot

Pitched up outside off, late away movement draws a loose drive from Voges, the thick outside edge was going fast and behind fifth slip but Stokes went full-length to his right and stuck out his right mitt, it stuck and then begin the celebrations. 2.5 - Broad to Voges, leg byes, FOUR, that was close as well. Not far from the stumps and also looked like a decent shout for lbw, Broad knows Voges from his days together at Notts, the Aussie has a tendency to shuffle across his stumps early on and Broad wanted to work on that. Bowled it full and on the pads, Voges shuffled across and missed the clip to leg, ran off the pads and past the diving Buttler. With a heavy cloud cover in place, expect Broad and Co. to replicate yesterday's performance. Can Australia survive the day? Broad meanwhile is bowling a few warm-up deliveries. A tricky 2-3 overs before lunch for the Aussie openers. Warner and Rogers walk out. Loud cheers echo around TB as the announcer calls out Broad's name.

England have a lead of 331 and must say it is a fine declaration by Cook. The conditions are overcast - helpful for swing and seam bowling and he wants to bowl at Australia. Australia and Starc in particular used the conditions well to their advantage to take 6 wickets today. Starc bowled unchanged this morning in a 10-over spell and took a six-fer. He swung the ball late and dismissed a couple of them with pearlers. Moeen Ali and Broad threw their bats around and that stretched the lead to over 300

Hoho! Cook calls his batsmen in. That is a surprise. Cook has seen enough and wants a couple of overs in before lunch. Warner and Rogers run off. They didn't expect the declaration. Cook wasn't even in his whites when he called them in. Totally out of the blue. The heavy roller is on now. Clarke pats Starc and the big tall lad leads the side off the field

85.2 - Johnson to Broad, no run, shaping away outside off, Broad wafts and misses. He was moving away from the line of the ball there. Miles away from the ball

85.1 - Johnson to Broad, no run, how did that miss off? Completely did Broad in. Slower one from Johnson, it is an offie, Broad is expecting something else, is slow to come forward and the ball misses the off stump not by much, Johnson has a smile

84.5 - Starc to Finn, no run, went for the inswinging yorker, missed it and a good take by Nevill diving to his left

84.4 - Starc to Finn, no run, wild hack from Finn. Tries to swing across the line to a full delivery outside off, doesn't contact. Starc has a wry smile on his face

Three slips, a short leg and a gully in

84.3 - Starc to Finn, no run, swinging in, rising through to the keeper after Finn shoulders arms

84.2 - Starc to Broad, 1 run, good length on the stumps, Broad is hopping back to defend, the thick outside edge runs down to third man

83.5 - Johnson to Finn, no run, that looks a more comfortable leave, still outside off, but not far from off either, Finn shoulders arms once more

83.4 - Johnson to Finn, no run, close to the off stump! Finn shoulders arms to one that is angled in and the ball flies over off stump. Not sure Finn knew much about it. He just left it hoping it doesn't crash into off stump

83.3 - Johnson to Finn, no run, sliding into the pads, Finn is late on it and the ball hits the pad and runs away behind square, where there is a leg gully

Steven Finn, right handed bat, comes to the crease

83.2 - Johnson to Moeen Ali, out Caught by Smith!! Super catch. That is reminiscent of Strauss' take in 2005 in the slips to dismiss Gilly. On a short of length and outside off, holds its line, Moeen Ali in trying to defend gets a thick outside edge, it was going wide of Smith at 2nd slip, but he dived and grabbed it with his left-hand, somehow it got stuck at the edge of his palm. He went full-length to catch that. Doesn't celebrate much. He is relieved that he caught it. Replays show that he was airborne when caught it. Moeen Ali c Smith b Johnson 38(24) [4s-7 6s-1]

Johnson to Moeen Ali, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

82.5 - Starc to Moeen Ali, 1 run, short of length outside off, Moeen Ali dabs it down to third man

82.4 - Starc to Moeen Ali, FOUR, a miscue but over short cover-point. Starc shakes his head. It was full and Moeen Ali wanted to go over cover, the bat face turned on impact and that meant it skewed off the thick outer half, raced away beating the chasing fielder, the 50-run stand is up in no time

82.3 - Starc to Moeen Ali, no run, back of a length outside off, left alone

81.5 - Hazlewood to Broad, SIX, Hazlewood continues to be poor. And expensive. Short outside off, with no real pace, Broad fetched it from there and pulled it to the deep square leg fence, got a good connection and middled it well. 20 off the over and a delivery still left

81.4 - Hazlewood to Broad, FOUR, Broad uses the long handle to good effect. Cleared his front leg and then went over mid-off, it was full and that allowed Broad to play the lofted stroke

81.3 - Hazlewood to Moeen Ali, 1 run, Moeen Ali missed out there, short and wide outside off, went too hard on the cut and bottom-edged it to backward point. Takes the single though

81.2 - Hazlewood to Moeen Ali, FOUR, another punchy drive, wide of mid-on, Moeen Ali driving on the rise, with a closed face and getting enough bat on it to beat the fielder. Consecutive fours for Moeen Ali

81.1 - Hazlewood to Moeen Ali, FOUR, beautiful drive straight down the ground, Hazlewood gets it to shape back in from a fuller length on the stumps, Moeen Ali shows the full face of the bat and then punches it past the bowler, missed the stumps at the other end and raced away

It was tossed up on the stumps, Moeen Ali gives the bowler the charge and lofts him straight back, clean hit and that went sailing away over the fence. The key was Moeen Ali getting to the pitch and a clean extension of the arms gave it the power needed

79.5 - Lyon to Broad, 1 run, flat and down leg, Broad tucks it to fine leg

79.4 - Lyon to Broad, no run, Broad stretches forward to defend to cover

79.3 - Lyon to Broad, no run, close, real close. Broad knelt down to paddle sweep and missed, was struck low on the pad and since the impact was umpire's call he survived. The ball was hitting the off stump

78.5 - Starc to Moeen Ali, FOUR, now Moeen Ali gets four over square leg. Starc went full and on the pads, it didn't swing in that much and Moeen Ali used the angle to put it away, beating the fielder at long leg with ease

78.4 - Starc to Moeen Ali, FOUR, superb cover drive on a bent knee. It was overpitched outside off, Starc looking for swing and overcompensating, Moeen Ali bent his back knee and then crunched it through cover. Raced away

Time for a drink. Australia have rode on Starc's display with the ball to take 4 wickets in that hour. The ball is swinging despite being it 78 overs old and that's not good news for the Aussies. Starc got his mojo back and swung it to dismiss the batsmen. In the process he has taken six wickets. We have seen Starc do this effortlessly with the white ball in ODIs, now here in this innings, we have seen him do it with the red cherry. This is the best that he has bowled on this tour. He got wickets at Cardiff but the late swing with control which makes him the devastating bowler that he is, is only on display here. He has been brilliant especially today

76.5 - Starc to Broad, no run, down leg, Broad flicks and misses

76.4 - Starc to Broad, no run, Broad is expecting the inswinger, the feet are rooted to the crease, but the ball moves away and beats him comprehensively, he left his bat hanging but the ball missed it

He left a big gap between bat and pad, the ball was pitched up around off, swung in and missed the inside edge to knock back Buttler's off stump. This is quality bowling from Starc. Day 2 is nearly upon us. It will take something of 2001 Kolkatan proportions for the Aussies to save the Ashes here at TB. It is overcast and cloudy much like the start of yesterday. England thrived on those conditions. Can Australia do the same and bowl England out, thereby limiting the lead to 300? Mind you, the centurion Root is still there and that means Australia will have to work that extra hard to get the remaining six wickets

So is there another twist in the tale? Can Australia show the virtues of courage, brilliance, commitment and skill, and essay a comeback? Or will Joe Root continue to inflict further misery by stretching the lead beyond Australia's reach? In short, today is the day when Australia have to strive every ounce of their energy to stay in the Ashes series.

"He now has experience, which is invaluable at this level, and as someone who is fit and strong he can motor through the 300s. Broad would have relished stepping up with no Anderson and he was absolutely brilliant England were sensational, but he was the leader."

"Broad has had a few niggling injuries throughout his career but his action has remained the same since he was a gangly youngster at Leicestershire," Lloyd told Sky Sports.

David Lloyd on his part believes that Broad can follow in James Anderson's footsteps by reaching the 400-wicket mark in Tests.

Jonathan Agnew in his column for the BBC showered praises on Broad for his believe-it-or-not spell of 8 for 15. "Stuart Broad produced a spell of bowling that we will still be talking about in 50 years to sink Australia to their knees and put England on the brink of regaining the Ashes."

"Now the challenge is to build a real legacy and go down as our greatest team. They are a young side with even the senior players having a few more years left in them so the chance is there to become a golden generation."

Writing for The Daily Telegraph, Michael Vaughan was full of praise for England's spellbinding performance. He said the current line-up have it in them to touch great heights. "This is an England team of huge promise who have achieved success far quicker than I ever expected."

"Australian cricket faces a mass cleanout. This is as bad as it gets, in the only series Australians genuinely care about," Horne added.

Sydney Daily Telegraph's Ben Horne believed not only were the visitors pummelled, but as Ian Botham said, "an Under-19 team on the village green".

"Eight wickets for Broad, who took his 300th in Test cricket in the first over and proceeded to make a head-start on 400. All eight were caught by slips, of which there were up to six at a time, jostling for a look and a piece of the action."

He said, "The details of Australia's so-called first innings need occupy no more space than it did time. All out 60. Sixty! It's not even much of a footy score. Top score, extras, bless them."

Greg Baum, penning his views for The Age, started with the headline: "Rampant England deliver Australia's blackest day."

'Where was the art of hanging in there, getting an ugly score, fighting, not giving your wicket away? It was too easy. England were superb from the moment they won the toss and forced the errors, but Australia could have been more defensive and had better technique. They looked shocked and had no real plan.'

McGrath's partner-in-crime for a long time, Shane Warne was critical of the way the Australian batsmen approached while playing on a seaming deck. "Australia have all sort of problems,' said the legendary leg-spinner to Sky Sports.

"They have to try and turn it around now. Technically, they have the wait for the ball to come a bit more. They went a little hard at the ball and you can't afford to do it on wickets like this. If you go too hard at the ball you're going to start nicking them and that's what Australia did," he was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia's Website.

Glenn McGrath lamented about the tourists playing with faulty techniques. "To get blasted out for 60, it doesn't help the confidence and especially with the state of the series with a few guys struggling for runs."

Jesse Hogan in The Sydney Morning Herald wrote about how poor Australia were with the bat. He said, "The effect of the visitors' capitulation in 18.3 overs, the shortest first innings of a Test in history, for 60 was compounded by the response of England. Their score of 4-274 was a truer reflection of the pitch in Nottingham than what had been produced earlier by the Australians, whose top-scorer was, humiliatingly, extras with 14."

Before the action begins, let us look to what the media had to say...

To put the icing on the cake for the home team, Joe Root compiled his 8th Test century and they already have a lead of over 200. Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of the 2nd day's play. For a moment, jog your memory back to the 1989 Ashes Test at Trent Bridge. Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor composed centuries to pilot the visitors to 301 for 0 at the end of day 1. Nearly 26 years later, the current Australian line-up was cleaned up for a mere 60 in 18.3 overs! Contrasting fortunes of two Australian sides indeed. In fact, it is a day that Clarke would like to forget as some bad dream.

Day 2: On day 1 of the fourth Ashes Test, Stuart Broad, in relentless pursuit of achieving success, explored the limits of his own skills to put the hosts in command. He pitched it up a touch further untiringly and moved the ball both ways in the air and off the seam to return astonishing figures of 8 for 15. The Australian batsmen pushed at the ball, got squared up and even threw kitchen sink at it in desperation, before succumbing to the unremitting control of Broad. The spectacle of Broad clasping the hearts of the batsmen with movement made for great viewing. Broad, during his memorable spell, became the fifth English cricketer to snare 300 Test wickets. By taking his first five wickets within a space of 19 deliveries, Broad now holds the record for being the joint fastest to take a five-wicket haul in Tests.

The reality is that the Ashes are almost gone bar a miracle. Can England end the game on day 2? Highly unlikely. But we saw that one can't take anything for granted on day 1. It has been an insane day of Test match cricket and we will be in nice and early on day 2. Hope you've enjoyed our coverage of day 1. Do join us tomorrow. Until then it is goodbye from us here. Remember to sleep tight! Adios!

The lead is 214 and we are just at the end of day 1. Unbelievable really! That's the beauty of cricket - the unpredictability of it continues to amaze us. Australia have had a shocker and if they had a wish to exercise at the end of the day, they would be hoping it was all a bad dream and would want to start all over again. Unfortunately for them that is just not reality.

Root showed the Aussies how to bat on this wicket displaying good technique, measured judgement and picked off the loose balls. Mind you the conditions were in his favor but you still have to make it count and he did just that. Showed that if one rides through the rough period, there were runs to be taken. Bairstow looked vulnerable to the short one early on but progressed serenely after that. Just when one thought that the duo will see it through to stumps, Bairstow flicked one straight to mid-wicket.

After tea it was Root and Bairstow - two Yorkshiremen who feasted on a tired looking Aussie attack. As the sun shone, the shoulders of the Aussies flagged. Both Hazlewood and Johnson were expensive with only Starc looking like producing a wicket. Root and Bairstow reached their respective milestones with the former continuing his golden run.

60 all-out in 94 minutes with 14 extras being the top-scorer sums up the sorry plight of the Aussie innings. The entire innings was over in a flash. Just as Broad took the last wicket, the sun came out and the conditions changed. Batting became easier and even though Starc took out Lyth and Bell, Cook and Root built a solid stand. Just before tea Starc came back to dismiss Cook.

Two wickets fell in the opening over and that set the tone. Edges went to hand and England caught everything that came their way with Stokes' one-handed horizontal take the highlight of the lot. Broad did nothing out of the ordinary, kept bowling in the right areas using the movement to get the batsmen out. The Aussie batters save for Warner and Nevill were like cats on a hot tin roof unable to withstand the seam and swing on offer. Clarke played a horrendous shot to get out and when the captain surrenders like that, shows that the team aren't up for the fight.

Catastrophic day for Australia. If anyone had said that David Warner would be bowling in the final session of the day, he would've been termed a lunatic and asked what he had for the day. Perfect bowling conditions when England won the toss and bowled first. Broad bowled the spell of his life as he snared 8/15 - perfectly revelling in the role of the lead bowler in the absence of Anderson. Anderson was there but not on the field as he watched the carnage from the dressing room with a wry smile on his face

It has certainly been a great day for the hosts. They have taken a vice-like grip on the proceedings. The pacers generated swing and got the ball to seam to snare the wickets. In particular, Broad bowled a dream spell and snaffled 8 wickets for a mere 15 runs! Joe Root, the man in form then essayed his 8th century as Australia found themselves in deep trouble

Welcome back! Tea would have tasted fairly better for the Australians given the horrendous first session they had. For England, it's time for the Yorkshire boys to keep the good work going. Ideal time for Bairstow to prove his worth. Starc has the ball, he has three slips and a gully in place

For Australia, other than Starc, rest of the bowlers struggled to make an impact. In particular, Mitchell Johnson struggled for control. Australia also didn't help their cause by dropping Cook. Steven Smith was the fielder, who spilled the catch. The visitors need to keep picking up wickets to have any hopes of coming back into the game.

Despite Mitchell Starc taking three wickets in the second session, England found themselves in the ascendancy. Starc bowled full and swung the new ball late to produce the wickets of Adam Lyth, Ian Bell and Alastair Cook. However, with Joe Root still at the crease, and as they are already in the lead, England will be pleased with their position. In fact, both Alastair Cook and Joe Root showed the way to other batsmen on how to play on this deck by mixing caution with aggression. Just in the nick of time though, Starc took the key wicket of Cook.

That will be tea on day 1.

20.3 - Hazlewood to Root, no run, outside off stump, ignored

20.2 - Hazlewood to Root, FOUR, poor cricket from Johnson in the deep, he went leg-first as he slid in the deep to stop the ball but fumbled. Short of a length delivery on the leg stump, Root flicks off the back foot and sends it to the deep mid-wicket boundary

20.1 - Hazlewood to Root, FOUR, wow! Lovely shot from Root and the crowd goes "Rooooottttt." Full and swinging away outside off stump, a lot of width on offer on that occasion and Root didn't miss out. Leans nicely forward and plays a cover-drive all along the ground

19.5 - Starc to Cook, no run, shortish and just outside off stump, Cook goes for the pull, mid-on is very square and it goes straight to him

19.4 - Starc to Cook, no run, fullish and on the stumps, Cook works it towards mid-on

19.3 - Starc to Cook, no run, full and swinging away, asking Cook to drive but left alone

19.2 - Starc to Cook, FOUR, edgedddd and between second and third slip. In fact, Smith got a hand on it. Australia will have to take these. On a length and swinging away outside off stump, Cook hops and looks to defend, the away-movement takes a thick outside edge, the ball was going to the left of Clark at second slip, but Smith dived across to his right from third slip but fingertipped it for four

18.4 - Johnson to Root, no run, good length delivery outside off stump, Root defends

18.3 - Johnson to Root, FOUR, friendly ball and Root helps it on its way, England have taken the lead now. Nice inswing on this length ball but Johnson started it very straight and it went down the leg-side, Root glanced it fine to the fine leg boundary

18.2 - Johnson to Root, no run, nice and full from Johnson, Root keeps it out

17.5 - Starc to Root, no run, Starc goes for the inswinging toe-crusher, but Root just manages to dig it out, the ball goes all the way towards long leg but poor calling meant they couldn't even cross over. Hopefully, this does not hurt England as we have seen a wicket fall after something like this

17.4 - Starc to Root, no run, short of length delivery swining back in, Root turns it towards square leg

17.3 - Starc to Root, no run, plays inside the line and decides to leave at the last moment, not that convincing but effective. Short of a length delivery angling away from the right-hander, Root was looking to defend off the back foot, but the ball held its line and that forced Root to draw his bat away

Welcome back.. What a first session it was! England and Broad were all over the Aussie batters. Can the Australian bowlers keep the game alive? Or will England strangle their hold on the game? We'll find out soon as the players make their way out to the middle.

This turned out to be Broad's best figures in an innings in Tests. When Broad took his fifth wicket after just 19 deliveries into his spell, he equalled the record of Ernie Toshack for the quickest five-wicket haul. Adam Lyth and Alastair Cook then took England to lunch. Australia need a monumental effort from their bowlers to keep the series alive. It can be said that the Ashes is slipping away from the visitors very quickly.

England put up a splendid performance with the ball to skittle out the visitors for a paltry total. In fact, Australia lasted just 18.3 overs and 94 minutes. Extras turned out to be the top-scorer for them. However, the credit has to go to Stuart Broad, who bowled a dream spell to snare eight wickets for a mere 15 runs. None of Australia's batsmen were able to play Broad with any degree of confidence. Most of them went hard at the ball and were caught in the slip cordon.

The Aussies go in pretty quickly for lunch on day 1. A couple of them might even skip lunch. That's how depressing and "horrific" in Shane Warne's words their session has been. He is mincing no words on air. It hurts being an Aussie supporter and Shane is a big one at that. Anyway read the summary of what transpired on a sensational and unbelieveable first session and do join us for the second one in a bit

The final Test of this series starts at the Oval on the 20th of August. Do join us for that. We will be in nice and early. On behalf of my entire hard-working team it is goodbye from us here for the moment. The cricket caravan continues to roll on. So catch up on the other series here as we bring you the live updates. Enjoy the weekend. See you soon and remember to sleep well and sleep tight! Ciao!

Phew the live coverage is off and we are done as well. The match ended in 40 minutes today but the post-match stuff took more than twice the time to finish. If one could be a bit cheeky, you could say our post-match coverage lasted longer than Australia's first innings! Anyway jokes apart, it has been as Cook says often a "fantastic" experience to bring you the coverage of this match. It was a short one but a thoroughly enjoyable one. We have had a ball bringing it to you. Hope you've enjoyed it as well

Joe Root: "Amazing! The great thing about this series was everyone chipped in throughout the series. It's not been led by just one or two players. At every point, someone has put in a valuable performance, which has led to us coming to this point. I think this is a great team to be a part of. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am sure it is going to be an entertaining evening and I just can't wait for the celebrations and then to crack on again at The Oval."

Ian Bell: Amazing feeling. The performances from the whole group of players have been incredible. So to be a part of my fifth winning Ashes is amazing but this one is right up there. The bowlers, Stokesy and Broady in this game, Jimmy at Edgbaston, they set the tone from ball one. The one thing we always ask is, whatever happens at the toss, whoever goes out there sets the tone and the bowlers have done that throughout the series and made it a lot easier for us as a batting unit. The dressing room atmosphere is great. I think the way we reacted after Lord's was exactly what we needed to do. I think Australia showed that after Cardiff. It's been outstanding. There was real calmness and when we got to Edgbaston it was about enjoyment and going out and expressing ourselves. Finally my batting starts to feel that like it is getting back in order but the team performances have been incredible."

James Anderson: "It was an amazing victory. What a feeling that was going around the field. The way we bowled this week was unbelievable. Stokes' performance in that second innings was unbelievable swing bowling."

Paul Farbrace: "Unbelievable feeling. Every session seems to have been an absolute roller-coaster. From the first half an hour, knocking 3-4 wickets over, it has been an incredible couple of days. So pleased with the lads because they worked so hard. From where we were after the loss at Lord's and to bounce back and play as well as they have done in the last two games, absolutely outstanding. We played really well in Cardiff and then we were hammered at Lord's and it really was a very low dressing room after that game. But the way the boys went away, regrouped, thought about it, came back and played was brilliant. I am so pleased for Cooky, he's been through the wringer in the last couple of hours and this morning he was a bit stressed, so to finish it that way was absolutely top-class. I don't think anyone could have dreamt of that given the fact that we are going to The Oval with the series already won, that's beyond dreams. Absolutely high-class from the boys. The satisfaction that we get from seeing the boys perform is amazing. It's about the players and they deserve all the credit. Ben Stokes, how well has he bowled? Rooty again, Broady stepped up when we had no Jimmy. Who said that we are going to struggle without Jimmy? Well, we haven't and he's a high quality bowler, but Broady was world-class."

Our coverage isn't done yet. We are in the process of transcribing lots of interviews that are taking place. So we will have them for you once it is done. Meanwhile the England players are seen mingling with the crowd, taking selfies, posing for photos, signing autographs and generally having a great time. They haven't left the ground and why would they? These are moments that are meant to be cherished and they are doing just that. Nice to see them mix with the crowd so freely. Lots of the crowd are still in and haven't left as well

Broad: "I never have seen a crowd listening so silently to both captains. It shows the respect that they have got for both guys. It has been an amazing series so far, delighted to have got over the line. But we have got one more Test and after probably tomorrow we have got to focus on that. Cooky will tell you I probably wanted to bat (referring to the opening day's initial session). Shows why he didn't listen to me. It was a good toss to win, live green grass. The way the bowling unit got the ball on a fuller length, the catching was absolutely spectacular. It has been a pleasure to have been a part of it this week. Lot of credit has to go to the batsmen, throughout this series we have played on wickets that have done a bit. To get scores on the board enabled us to create pressure as a bowling unit. It is a great feeling to have regained the Ashes. Last four innings four different guys have got fifers, shows how we have dovetailed. Bowling is always about partnerships. It doesn't get talked about that much. But you have to create pressure at the other end if someone is on a run. That's the best I have ever seen Ben Stokes bowl. He had the ball on a piece of string. What an exciting future he has got for England. To deliver that in a high pressure game was awesome to watch. It gives you the luxury of bowling short spells (on playing with five bowlers). The wickets we have played have seamed and you have to bang the ball into the wicket in England. You can't put it there. We have settled into a five-man attack, first time that it has happened since Freddie (Flintoff) was around. And it shows how important it is and how it allows each bowler to really apply the pressure when they get the ball in their hand. They printed my face on their back page and that is the biggest compliment they could pay me (talking about the Brisbane Courier Mail's picture of him). I will take it. At least they have taken an year off me (when mentioned that they still haven't described his name, instead using the words '28-year old medium pacer'). The younger guys are leading the team through. The likes of Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Mark Wood and Finny. I was glued to the ODI series against New Zealand like everyone was. The guys have carried it on. The games have been 3-4 days but it has been action packed. I feel like I have had five day games. It is exciting to be involved in and I hope that we continue to play this style of cricket because it is entertaining the crowd."

Stuart Broad is the Man of the Match for his 8/15 in the first innings. It was his career-best figures and in the process he took his 300th Test wicket as well. That spell meant that England were well on their road to regaining the Ashes

Cook: "Just to Michael (Clarke) from the England team, a fantastic player, a fantastic leader and a very tough moment. You should remember for a great captain and congratulations Michael (the crowd cheer for that appreciation). No I can't (when asked if he can believe that they have regained the Ashes). Sorry, Michael got emotional and has made me emotional as well. From where we had been over the last 18 months to achieving what we did here in these last three days, incredibly proud of the lads. (Cook gets emotional too and his voice chokes, he is close to breaking down as well). We have done something which I didn't think was quite possible at the beginning of the summer (in fact there is a tear in his eye and his eyes are moist - Athers seems to be enjoying it though as he cheekily asks whether he will break down as well). When you lose 5-0, there is a big turnover of players and a new side develops quickly. It has taken a little bit of time. Ben Stokes in that second innings was absolutely fantastic. Joe Root has gone from strength to strength. Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali have come in and they have done incredibly well and they are the ones who have driven this side forward. Also as captain lucky to have got a group of senior players. Broady to step up, at the beginning of the series, we needed someone to step up and do something special. 8-15 pretty much not guarantees you the Test match but puts you in a really good position. Jimmy and Belly - the support I have had from them means a lot. I know Peter Moores isn't here but he did a lot of work with those players. He saw them grow as international players. Trevor (Bayliss) has come in and taken that forward. Without Peter and that development, that was a tough time a couple of months ago. Today it isn't about me getting emotional. It is about the group of players who have taken the journey, the journey through incredibly tough times to get to the amazing times. Sport does that at times. To go in without Jimmy for this match, such a great bowler is nerve-wracking but the other guys have stepped up fantastically well. That's the moment we play for when Woody gets the last wicket. At the beginning of the New Zealand series, we wanted to show off our talent as a side. Part of that was leading from the front and I had to take a step forward as a captain. Yes you are right - I'm quite stubborn in certain things. It might have taken a bit of time to do that. The captain is only as good as the other 10 players in the team. He (Trevor Bayliss) has only just turned up, just not give him too much credit (trolled the coach there and big smiles in the balcony from the side). He has been brilliant. The whole backroom staff, the one constant has been Paul Farbrace. They have made us relax and play our game. Ottis Gibson, Chris Taylor as well. Real good support network. Our physios - Mark Saxby, the extra-ordinary goalkeeper in the morning, Phil Neal. All that fantastic support we have been getting, that's the kind of behind the scenes which doesn't get the credit it deserves. It will be strange going into the next Test match with nowhere being near as nervous. We want to put in a really good performance there. Incredible three days, over the last four matches, the crowd here at TB and the crowd at the other games have been really amazing. Walking down the street, the people have really got behind this England team and from the bottom of the heart really appreciate it. It has been an amazing journey as England captain - so thank you"

Unbelievably frank and honest speech by Clarke. Wish there were more captains like him. Says it as he sees it. Standing ovation from the TB crowd. Will get the entire contents soon. Too many things happening. Just bear with me

Clarke: "We probably didn't start well in this Test match when we were bowled out for 60. Our goal was to come here and have some success. I think Alastair Cook and his boys deserve credit, they have shown how to execute good swing and seam bowling in these conditions. It wasn't lack of trying, the Aussie boys have worked extemely hard but we have been beaten by a better team. All the cricketers can learn from that (how the series swung so quickly after Lord's). Just when you think you are doing well, you are one duck away from doing poorly. England when they have had the momentum have grabbed it with both hands and have made the most of it. They have shown their class in this Test match - that's for sure. Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, those two in particular and Stokesy in this game have shown that you need to put the ball in the right areas consistently. And when the edges are produced you need to hang on to those chances. That's what England have done really well in this series. 'Maybe for the captain' (when asked if this tour was one too many for some of the players). There is no doubt that I will always hold myself accountable as captain. My performances as captain have been nowhere near the level and the standard they need to be for an Australian cricketer and to be captain. I don't want to blame anyone and as a team we haven't performed as well as we have needed to. And as a captain I certainly haven't led from the front (the crowd cheer after that last statement). Not when you perform as I have performed in this series (when asked if it was a difficult decision to retire). I started playing at the age of 6 and it is hard to walk away. But I think it is the right time. As a player you build up for big tournaments. The World Cup was that in ODI cricket and Ashes in Test matches. Unfortunately I haven't played as well as I would've liked. It is the right thing and right time to walk away now and give the next captain the chance to prepare for the next Ashes series (again the crowd give him a standing ovation). I have been very lucky to have played over a hundred Test matches for Australia. I certainly didn't expect that as a young boy. When I came into the team there were 10-11 older brothers or second fathers, all those old guys looking after me and taking care of me and helping me learn and grow. And then I get into a position to help the younger players - hopefully I have done that (suddenly his voice chokes and he sheds a tear or two, takes a moment to compose himself) - (Athers asks him if he is ok to continue - Clarke says he is fine). I'm sick of crying on television. I know that. There is so much talent in the change room and the boys will be fine. There is no doubt about it, we have got good players, plenty of talent - it is going to take a lot of hard work especially when you are playing against great teams. The potential is there and the work ethic is there - our support staff do a fantastic job, trying to help us get better. We are very lucky in Australia - we have got a lot of talented players, I will keep the faith - that's for sure"

Time now for the presentation ceremony and it will be the match officials who will get their medallions first

Michael Clarke in conversation with Shane Warne:: "I think England deserve a lot of credit. I think they showed us how to execute good swing bowling, good seam bowling throughout this series. We have to be very honest and say we were outplayed, there's no doubt about it. I have one more Test and that will be the end of my career. I am retiring from international cricket. I certainly don't want to jump the ship and leave the boys in the middle, so I'll play the last Test at The Oval, give it one last crack, but the time is right now mate. You never want to walk away from the game, but I think my performances in the series and over the last 12 months have not been acceptable to me. I pride myself on leading from the front, so that's been disappointing. I think you build yourself up for big tournaments and big series. One-day cricket is about the World Cup and Test cricket is about the Ashes. I certainly tried my best, the boys have tried their best. We got outplayed, we got beaten and now it's time for the next generation of players or the next captain to have his opportunity to try and build the team again and get ready for the next Ashes series."

It has to be said though, for a brief period, David Warner and Chris Rogers gave them a glimmer of hope. But once both of them were dismissed, the tourists hurtled towards a defeat. Voges played with a touch of calm countenance, but he hardly got any support. For the home team, Stokes was the star performer in the second innings. When the hosts were searching for wickets, he generated prodigious swing to dismantle the batting line-up and took his second five-wicket haul in Tests. He also took a spectacular catch in the first innings. In short, England have just been the better side in this series. Even their slip fielding, which has been a cause of concern for about two years now was largely good in this series. Only on day 2 at Trent Bridge were England below par as they dropped catches. The tourists though, have a lot to ponder, as their batsmen have struggled to play the moving ball, and the pacers on occasions, lacked the control. They will be playing for pride in the last Test at The Oval, which starts on 20th of August. It will turn out to be the final game for Michael Clarke in international cricket. Clarke announced his retirement after the completion of the fourth Test.

England then capitalised on a well-constructed ton by Root. Jonny Bairstow too composed an entertaining fifty. For the tourists, Mitchell Starc swung it around the corners on day 2 and ended up with a six-for. However, when England declared at 391 for 8, it already felt as if, it was going to be a gargantuan task for Australia to make a comeback.

Earlier in the Test, Broad gave a wonderful exhibition of seam and swing bowling to record heart-stirring figures of 8 for 15. He made the ball to move this way, that way by hitting an upright seam, and the opposition batsmen didn't have much of a clue as they capitulated. During that spell, Broad also reached the glittering landmark of 300 Test wickets. He became the fifth English cricketer to complete that milestone.

Match Summary: England played with sparkle and fizz to thump the visitors and regain the Ashes series. The hosts have now taken an unassailable lead of 3-1, with just one match to go. England's cricketers will celebrate long and hard today. Remember, 599 days ago, they handed over the Ashes to Australia at the WACA. Alastair Cook as a captain has certainly shown a lot of self-belief to lead the side to a superb triumph. At Trent Bridge, Stuart Broad, Ben Stokes and Joe Root played pivotal roles for them. At the other end of the spectrum, once Australia were bowled out for 60 in the first innings, it was always going to be an uphill task. On the third day, England needed just three wickets to wrap up the proceedings and it didn't take long for them to do that. Adam Voges essayed a handy fifty, but on expected lines, it turned out to be in a losing cause.

Now the cameras are in the England dressing room. Stokes has a beer in hand and everyone except Moeen Ali - who is a devout Muslim - has a beer in hand. Moeen has a Coke. Ian Ward who had gone to interview a few England players is drenched with champagne and beer. Jimmy Anderson the naughty boy who spoiled Wardy's expensive suit. Wardy though takes it in the right spirit and laps it all in. He even manages to interview Jimmy Anderson despite being wet. The post-match presentation will be up next. Looks like it may take a while for that to happen as the England players are still on the balcony celebrating. In the meantime have a read at our match summary. Don't go anywhere, we will bring you everything about the presentation. Clarke's speech is one that I'm looking forward to

Mark Wood is a showman as he does his riding horse impression. A bit of a character the Durham man. Finn goes to the crowd and hugs - I think someone from his family. A tear in the eye for Buttler. Meanwhile breaking news - Michael Clarke is going to retire from international cricket after the end of the Oval Test! There were rumors since last night and it has been confirmed now. A legend of the game and he will depart the scene soon. He won the World Cup for Australia in March. How quickly the fortunes change in this great game!

The England team are now doing a round of the ground in appreciation of the support that they have got from the crowd at TB. Anderson hugs Cook. Root is seen with his boyish cherubic smile. The support staff stand on the balcony and lap it all up. An emotional moment for Stokes as Broad puts an arm around him. Fourth Ashes series win for Cook while it is the fifth for Ian Bell - who now equals Sir Ian Botham. The champagne is ready. England pose for a team photo. Brilliant scenes out there

Stokes: "We've won the Ashes with one game to go, it's just surreal. From where I was last time in Australia in an Ashes series and to be here now as an Ashes winner is just absolutely amazing. The crowd here was absolutely electric. This is the best I have bowled in an England shirt. Everything clicked, the ball was swinging and luckily things went my way but the whole eleven has put in a 100 percent."

Cook: "Unbelievable moment. I couldn't be happier. From what we've been through as a side over the last 18 months, to play like we have played in 3 of the 4 Test matches against a very good Australian side is incredible. The crowd has been fantastic. Thanks to all our families. I am just so proud of this young team. The way they've taken this opportunity, even without Jimmy - he's obviously been an absolute legend in the first three games and to hang around here and help the guys - without the leader to do that, was incredible. Amazing turnaround. A lot has happened behind the scenes as well. We need to thank Peter Moores as well, I know he's not here, but a lot of the guys had made huge developments under him as players. You saw a lot of it in this series. Obviously Trevor Bayliss has come in and done a fantastic job alongside Paul Farbrace and the guys. We have to remember him, we did make some strides under Moores."

As soon as the last wicket fell, Lyon was down on his knees in disappointment - a bit like Brett Lee at Edgbaston in 2005. But there was no Andrew Flintoff in this England side to offer him a hand. Broad who finished with 9 wickets in the match takes a stump as a souvenir. Stokes the hero in the second innings gets a stump too. The men of the moment - Cook and Stokes are talking to Ian Ward and we will bring you all those interviews. Do stay tuned as we cover each and every important moment of this historic day

Cook gets an embrace from most of his team-mates. Paul Farbrace and Jimmy Anderson are all smiles. The WAGS of the England team are there as well. Not much emotion from Cook but looks like he has a tear in his eye. Not 100% sure though. The Aussies come out and congratulate the victors. That is how the game should be played. Play hard but play fair and then after you win/lose appreciate the other side's efforts. That's why it is called a gentleman's game. It didn't take long today for the game to be over. But one expected the same as well

72.4 - Mark Wood to Lyon, out Bowled!! There it is! England have regained the Ashes! A fantastic comeback after a horror series away in 2013-14 when they were Mitchell Johnson-washed 5-0. A historic moment for the entire team and the TB crowd go wild. Redemption for Cook as he was the one who was captain when they lost 0-5 in Australia. He must be a happy and delighted man. That's the beauty of sport for it offers a chance for the vanquished to be a victor once more. Another three-day Test. Coming to the wicket - it was full and outside off, Lyon was shaping to leave that but was late in getting the bat away from the line of the ball, the thick inside edge crashes into the stumps and the celebrations begin. The stumps are a mess as Mark Wood roars and leaps in delight. Lyon b Mark Wood 4(12) [4s-1]

Mark Wood to Lyon, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!

72.3 - Mark Wood to Lyon, FOUR, he plays that shot well, drifting down leg, Lyon clips it to fine leg for a boundary. Needed to get bat on it and did so

72.2 - Mark Wood to Lyon, no run, well outside off, easy leave

72.1 - Mark Wood to Voges, 1 run, short outside off, short-arm jabbed to deep mid-wicket, when Voges hit it he wanted two, but the fielder was quick and didn't allow that. Lyon has to face five off Mark Wood now

69.6 - Stokes to Lyon, no run, Lyon goes "ooooh" after a big hooping inswinger from Stokes, so close to taking the outside edge as Lyon defended and missed, it wasn't far from off stump either. Lyon knew that it was a fine delivery and was too good for him. The way Stokes is moving the ball both ways in this innings is a sight to behold

69.5 - Stokes to Lyon, no run, still the line is outside off, Lyon pulls the bat inside the line and lets it go

69.4 - Stokes to Lyon, no run, it isn't on target and outside off, so Lyon leaves

69.3 - Stokes to Voges, 1 run, the crowd cheer but it is more for Voges taking the single and exposing Lyon rather than the fact that he has got to fifty. On a short of length and outside off, pushed in front of point and Voges takes the single. With that single he gets to fifty as well. A raise of the bat and Clarke and Lehmann are seen clapping. It has been a gutsy, gritty innings from Voges who played a lot here at TB for Notts

69.2 - Stokes to Voges, no run, similar delivery to the last one, another leave

The ball clatters into middle stump and just the wicket away now from winning the Ashes back again are England. Mark Wood roars in delight. He was aiming for that delivery all over and finally executed it to perfection. Hazlewood b Mark Wood 0(10)

68.3 - Mark Wood to Hazlewood, no run, good delivery and Hazlewood keeps it out. Full and swinging in towards the toes, Hazlewood digs it out

Four slips, a gully and a leg-slip in

68.2 - Mark Wood to Voges, 1 run, the crowd cheer as Voges takes a single. Yorker on the stumps, Voges jammed it out near the vacant short mid-wicket area and took the run. Now he has exposed Hazlewood

67.5 - Stokes to Hazlewood, no run, pitched up outside off, Hazlewood mistimes the drive to mid-off

67.4 - Stokes to Hazlewood, no run, now this one goes over off stump! Stokes and Hazlewood share a wry smile. This was the dream delivery, just that it didn't take a wicket. Swung in the air and seemed that it would land on middle, but after it pitched it moved away with extra bounce, going past the bat and bouncing over the stumps. Stokes is hooping that ball big time and that delivery would've troubled any batsman in the world and Hazlewood is just a tailender. He knew how good the ball was

67.3 - Stokes to Hazlewood, no run, Stokes has his hands on his head. The big inswinger and it misses the leg stump, after beating the inside edge of the defending Hazlewood. With the angle from round the wicket it just accentuated the movement

Stokes if he gets it on the stumps can get Hazlewood out. Hazlewood is backing away and showing all his three stumps. Looks like he won't get in line. Did the same in the first innings too

65.1 - Stokes to Starc, no run, over the top of off stump! Angled in from round the wicket, it pitched and then went over the top of the off stump, missing the outside edge of Starc. Starc was playing inside the line and didn't know much about the delivery, extra bounce missing the stump

The Aussie batsmen are out there. How long will it take for England to take the last three wickets? This could get over very quickly. A historic day for English cricket is in the offing. Starc will face the first ball and Mark Wood has the ball in hand. A loud cheer as Wood begins to run in to complete his unfinished over from last night

Well, we are getting news that Michael Clarke may step down after this series and retire from international cricket. We will get an idea at the post-match presentation when Clarke will speak. Will bring you news and the latest on that as and when we know it. Meanwhile the players walk out to a standing ovation. Cook is seen smiling and in a happy mood. Why won't he be?

Stay tuned my dear friends... Alastair Cook and his men are just 3 wickets away from REGAINING THE ASHES.

Penning his views in The Telegraph, Jonathan Liew went about his own style of analysing things. "There were two dropped catches and two wickets from no-balls. It seems churlish to point all this out after the extraordinary feats of day one, but England have hauled themselves to the brink of winning this series not by being consistently excellent, but simply by being less inept more often," he wrote.

Nasser Hussain, in his column in The Daily Mail, lauded England for their relentless effort throughout the series. "The team deserve to enjoy this success because it has been a terrific effort, but the challenge now is how to take it on further, and try to regain the No 1 position in the world," wrote the former English skipper.

"In a burst of less than five overs shortly before afternoon tea at the quaintly staid Trent Bridge Cricket Ground today, Australia engaged in an impromptu public demonstration of this theory and in doing so proved it correct beyond debate," he added.

Andrew Ramsey's report for the Cricket Australia website spoke volumes about the dismal show of the Australian batters. "To borrow from an overused and wrongly attributed cliche, the definition of inanity is to continue playing a shot that is likely to get you out while somehow expecting that it won't."

Andrew Wu's headline in The Sydney Morning Herald said: "Michael Clarke's captaincy to be reviewed as Ashes defeat looms for Australia." Andrew also mentioned: "Just months after leading Australia to a World Cup triumph on home soil, Clarke is on very shaky ground, his four-year reign as captain and decorated career in grave danger of coming to an inglorious end."

So, getting back to Punter's comments in The Sydney Morning Herald, he added: "There could be up to eight guys who might not ever play Test cricket again in this touring squad. Beyond those four players (Rogers, Harris, Haddin and Watson), however, Ponting was coy on who his other four nominated casualties would be." "There are a few others, but that might do me," he revealed.

Let's quickly gander at the newspaper segment which is filled with England's joy and Australia's despair.

For England, they are just 3 wickets away from snatching back the Ashes and every English fan would be delighted with the way things have gone for the home team. Just when Australia looked to squeeze some momentum, Stokes came in and reminded everyone how good he can be with the ball. Ian Bell will be in the history books from today - for being one of the few English cricketers to have won five Ashes series. Voges is still at the crease and he needs to produce a Laxman-at-Eden Gardens-esque innings, but unfortunately for Australia, there is no wall at the other end.

Day 3: A report in The Sydney Morning Herald said: "Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting reckons up to half of their Ashes squad may never play Tests again beyond the Oval, in the wake of England's imminent crushing series victory." - Do we need any better example of what this series means to the mighty Australians? Of course, both teams play for a lot of pride, but one has to say that Australia have been terrible in this series so far and their performance in this Test match would deeply hurt any Australian fan.

Clarke never looked comfortable at the crease and he was eventually sent back by Wood courtesy a rebound from Bell. Voges and Nevill battled hard and constructed a 50-run stand for the sixth wicket. Nevill, who looked tentative throughout his knock, was eventually trapped plumb in front by Stokes. Voges finally came to the party with a composed knock but it was little too late for him and Australia. So, England are just a day's distance from RECLAIMUMNG THE ASHES. If Australia are to save/win this match, they need something close to impossible. Join us tomorrow for what could be the last day of this Test match. Until then, it's goodbye and good night from all of us here.

It came as a surprise to many when Cook declared just 20 minutes before lunch with just one wicket to go. The plan of getting an early breakthrough didn't work out for a quite a long time as Warner and Rogers played with more purpose in the second innings. Broad produced Flintoff-esque (Edgbaston 2005) stuff just before lunch, but credit to Warner for managing to survive those scary deliveries. The Aussie openers played with a positive intent and resisted themselves from attempting bad shots. Towards the end of the second session, when every other English bowler failed to trouble the opening duo, Stokes came in - ran hard and bowled the spell of his life. Almost every delivery of his looked like producing a wicket. Recklessness of the Australian batsmen helped him too as he scalped 3 quick wickets before tea.

It has gotten bad to worse for the Australians as they failed to apply themselves with the bat yet again. England will be the happier lot among the two sides and it looks like they are well on course to regain the Ashes tomorrow. Earlier in the day, Joe Root and Mark Wood, the overnight batsmen struck a few handy blows before the former nicked one to the keeper. Rest of the batsmen kept flashing hard in quest of quick runs and helped England's lead get past 300. Starc, with his ability to swing the old ball, produced a brilliant spell and ended up with a six-fer before Cook made a sudden decision to declare.

Umpires get together and they decide that the light is too bad to continue and the players walk off the field. Stokes had a word with the umpires, but in the end, decides to walk off the field. Stokes also gets the honour of leading the England team back to the pavilion. That is stumps then. Anyway, only four minutes were left before the scheduled close of play. The only consolation for the tourists is that they have taken the game to the third day

40.5 - Mark Wood to Clarke, out Caught by Bell!! That is brilliant work from Bell and Cook, Bell takes it on the rebound. Everyone watching the game knew this was coming, Clarke was feeling for the balls outside off and is going hard at those deliveries too. He finally nicked one and the outside edge was well held by Bell. Cook at first slip initially went to his right and failed to grab it on the first attempt and while losing his balance flicked it to Bell on the second attempt, Bell at 2nd slip then takes the rebound. Coming to the ball, full and seamed away sharply in the corridor of uncertainty. Clarke c Bell b Mark Wood 13(37) [4s-1]

So, will this be the last session of the Test match? Trent Bridge and whole of England will be eagerly waiting for the symbolic moment of England reclaiming the Ashes? For that to happen, they need 6 wickets more while Australia are miles behind this game. Welcome back friends! Michael Clarke has a lot of work to do, Stokes has the ball, four slips in place

Just when things looked fairly bright for the Aussies, they kept slipping away towards the end of the session. Broad picked Steven Smith who kept flashing hard since the time he arrived. Stokes has to be the talking point after the end of this session. He stood up and fulfilled his role as an all-rounder. Had it not been for him, the Australian openers could have easily piled on the runs and would have reduced the deficit. If there is one last chance for the Australian skipper to save the Ashes, this is it. We will wait and see if he can produce anything magical..

Luck was with Australia throughout but the Aussie openers got loose as soon as they reached their fifties. The openers played with good caution in the initial hour after lunch and were harsh on the bad balls. Finn was the least impressive while Wood and Stokes bowled with good venom. Slip fielding wasn't up to the mark as Cook and Bell dropped chances off Warner respectively. Wood consumed Rogers on 47, but the latter had overstepped and it looked like luck was still smiling against the Englishmen. However, the home team came back strongly by sending back Warner, Rogers, Shaun Marsh and Steven Smith in quick succession.

That will be tea then

Marsh comes half-forward, pushes at it, gets an outside edge and Root at third slip takes the catch. Marsh has before too paid the price for coming half-forward. It also has to be said that since the Radcliffe stand was built in 1998, it has helped the bowlers to swing as the ground has got enclosed. 15.5 - Stokes to Warner, no run, another chance goes begging, edged and dropped again, this time it's Bell at second slip. Full and angled in on off, Warner looks for the drive, outside edge flies towards the right of Bell who dived full length. 4.5 - Broad to Chris Rogers, no run, tentative footwork from Rogers and it almost costs him his wicket. Good length delivery angling in from wide of the crease, probably the ball just holds it line after pitching and that was good enough to beat Rogers' poke

4.1 - Broad to Chris Rogers, no run, loud shout for caught behind, umpire Aleem Dar shakes his head and rightly so. He thought about it for a while, but ruled that Not Out. Good length delivery swinging down the leg-side from round the wicket, Rogers misses the glance, the ball brushes the thigh en route to the keeper

Over: 4 0 2 0 4 0 0 AUS 20/0
Warner 6(13) Chris Rogers 8(11) Mark Wood 2-0-14-0

3.6 - Mark Wood to Warner, no run, poor review that from England. Mark Wood goes for the inswinging toe-crusher, Warner is beaten by pace and the late inswing, tries to dig it out but the ball hits his right boot, however, it was easily pitching outside leg and it was quite clear to the naked eye that it was Not Out. England have lost a review very early

Now then, was that boot first? Was that swinging too much? Oh Cook has decided to review. "That's a fair delivery. Can we have Hot-Spot please, I am happy that there is no bat, can we go to RTS just to confirm, okay, I am happy with that. Can we go to ball-tracking please? Pitching outside leg Ravi, so you can stay with your original decision." says third umpire Erasmus.

3.5 - Mark Wood to Warner, no run, short of length delivery down the leg-side, Warner misses the glance

3.4 - Mark Wood to Warner, FOUR, not convincing from Warner. He goes for the back foot punch as Wood bowls in the back of a length region, the ball hits the outside half of the bat and flies through the vacant point region, a fielder there would have swallowed it

3.3 - Mark Wood to Warner, no run, bit of extra lift this short of length delivery outside off stump, but Warner left it alone. It would have been very interesting if he had played at it

3.2 - Mark Wood to Warner, 2 runs, driven on the rise and the man at cover can't make a clean stop, that allows Warner to open his account in this Test match. On a length and outside off stump, Warner plays on the front foot and picks up a couple

3.1 - Mark Wood to Warner, no run, loose from Mark Wood after the break, sprays the short of length delivery down the leg-side, it swings further down and makes Buttler's life difficult, but the keeper does well to dive to his right and half-stop the ball

Welcome back for the second session. Australia are under serious pressure and they need to fight very hard from here to save/win the Test match and the Ashes. It's going to be tough though as there is a bit of cloud cover to assist the England bowlers. Wood to begin with four slips in place.

Even though, Australia were able to go to lunch without losing a wicket, they have an uphill task on their hands. Stuart Broad was again able to produce appreciable movement and extract disconcerting bounce at the start of the second innings to put Warner under immense pressure. One expects the pace troika to continue to cause problems to the opposition ranks for the rest of the day.

Earlier, it was Starc, who bowled it full and generated late swing to trouble the English batsmen. The inswinging yorker he bowled to shatter Mark Wood's stumps was a ripper. He also took the crucial scalp of the centurion, Joe Root. Josh Hazlewood was expensive, but ended up with three wickets to his name. However, Mitchell Johnson bowled all over the place and struggled for rhythm.

Riding on the brilliance of Mitchell Starc's six-wicket haul, the tourists were able to make breakthroughs at regular intervals. Alastair Cook in the end declared with England nine down. However, Chris Rogers and David Warner were able to come through a tricky little session before lunch.

That's lunch on day 2. What an over that was from Broad. Four deliveries that had Warner in all sorts of strife. Warner had no clue as to what the ball did there, but he somehow survived that. Exceptional fast bowling from the local lad

2.5 - Broad to Warner, no run, fourth ball that has beaten Warner in the over. Broad goes a little wide of the crease and delivers it on a good length outside off, the ball straightens and turns Warner inside out, goes past the edge, not close to the snick as Warner pulled the bat sharply inside the line. Broad is humming with the ball

2.4 - Broad to Warner, no run, full and targetting off stump, Warner gets forward and shows the full face of the bat to defend it back to Broad

What can Broad do now?

2.3 - Broad to Warner, no run, three in a row! How do you play that. This was much fuller and outside off, with the angle in, he had to play and did well not to nick it, Warner got a bit squared up there, the slight movement away takes it past the edge. This is serious fast bowling. Cook likes it and so do the crowd

2.2 - Broad to Warner, no run, what a ball again! This is fabulous stuff from Broad. Similar one to the last one, squares up Warner and the extra bounce takes it over the outside edge, Warner just about lowered his hands there. Too good and Broad is now at the top of his game with the ball

2.1 - Broad to Warner, no run, unplayable! That is a serious delivery, angled in and then it kicks off a length, Warner had it covered as he looked to ride the bounce, but it kept rearing on him and was a whisker away from catching the edge, Warner looked to drop his hands but was too late
