45.1 - Jordan to Tharanga, FOUR, pulled. Looked mostly in control as he slotted this over mid-wicket

39.4 - Willey to Tharanga, FOUR, "slightly agricultural," it's called on air. Tharanga uses the angle on this fuller delivery to cross-bat this through a vacant mid-on region. Off the middle mostly for it to scoot away

34.3 - Plunkett to Chandimal, FOUR, that was an attempted yorker but it was down leg and not too full. Easy tickle through fine leg

29.3 - Willey to Chandimal, FOUR, so the boundaries are beginning to come for Sri Lanka. Willey misdirects his off-cutter, bowls it on a back of a length on middle and leg and is whipped away fine, beating short fine leg

28.4 - Adil Rashid to Chandimal, FOUR, good this from the Lankan batsmen. They haven't allowed Rashid to bowl to them today. Chandimal goes down on one knee, quite premeditatedly to be honest, it's a googly which is very full on middle and leg and he brooms it away behind square

28.1 - Adil Rashid to Mathews, FOUR, Mathews is opened up by the turn, the edge is found but again .. it's so slow this pitch. It goes to ground straightaway and sneaks through the fingers of the slip fielder, running away into the third man fence

26.3 - Adil Rashid to Chandimal, FOUR, clears the front leg upon seeing the ball tossed up generously and has a mighty heave. The ball was full enough to negate much risk of playing against the turn and Chandi gets a good chunk of it. On the bounce and into the wide long-on fence

24.2 - Adil Rashid to Mathews, FOUR, more runs off Rashid's bowling. Just hasn't been able to find much rhythm today. Again slips down the leg-side and Mathews manages a little tickle off the inside edge for the ball to run away fine, beating Plunkett at short fine leg

23.1 - Plunkett to Mathews, FOUR, a punt by Mathews early in his innings, taking on the mid-off fielder. Gives the charge but he's nowhere near the ball, goes through with the loft and gets enough on it to clear the infield

17.5 - Jordan to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, pulled, off the front foot, and over wide mid-on. Not all that short from Jordan but this is a slow pitch and the ball sits up for Mendis to belt it away

16.4 - Adil Rashid to Chandimal, FOUR, almost another one down! Chandimal goes down on one knee and slog sweeps it just past a flying mid-on. He'll get a boundary

15.0 - Adil Rashid to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, too short again from Adil Rashid and this time Kusal Mendis finds some timing to deposit this into the deep mid-wicket fence

10.5 - Plunkett to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, short again and this time Kusal Mendis connects. Pulled crisply horizontally between midwicket and long on and the ball beats Bairstow's valiant dive

7.0 - Willey to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, and finally! Just their second boundary off this innings. Short and ample width provided, Kusal Mendis cuts it hard through point en route to the fence

1.5 - Woakes to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, back of a length and provides just that hint of width, Kusal Mendis pounces on it cutting it square of the wicket for a boundary. Top shot

41.2 - Willey to Tharanga, SIX, that's dropped... beyond the ropes! Gets it on a fuller length outside off, aligns his bat swing with the productive run arc of his and bears fruits over mid-wicket

25.2 - Plunkett to Mathews, SIX, full, in his half and Mathews has another swipe..All the way. Mid-on was up so he only had to clear him. The bat even turned in his hands but Mathews struck it with enough power to swat a flat six

18.0 - Jordan to Kusal Mendis, SIX, shorter and it goes further, into the mid-wicket crowd. Mendis is into position very early, gets a good meat on it with a pull and it sails away to glory

49.0 - Woakes to Tharanga, out Bowled!! Bazinga! Makes room by backing away from his stumps to slog this delivery away, misses and Woakes's radar hits the top of middle. Woakes finishes his spell - 10-1-34-3 - and will be on a hat-trick next match. Tharanga b Woakes 40(33) [4s-2 6s-1]

48.5 - Woakes to Maharoof, out Caught by Bairstow!! A short cutter, Maharoof looks to blast it away with a pull. Doesn't make do with the lack of pace, does Maharoof. Also had made too much of room to reach this delivery outside off, ekes out a top edge that carries to deep mid-wicket. Maharoof c Bairstow b Woakes 9(11)

45.0 - Adil Rashid to Dasun Shanaka, out Dasun Shanaka Run Out!! A failed run abortion. The leisurely turning legbreak allows Shanaka to be drawn across for a dab to short third man. He runs, the quick throw from Root is on the way and he decides mid-pitch to turn back and dive, more because of Tharanga's vocal chords than his own intuition. Very close this and the third umpire took millions of frames to judge this. Dasun Shanaka run out (Root/Buttler) 2(8)

43.1 - Jordan to Mathews, out Caught by Buttler!! The death bowling has officially begun, Jordan has a wicket. A slow short ball that forces out a surprise pull, off the top-edge and Buttler runs in an angle behind and pouches it where a leg gully would have been. A big wicket so mistimed that it threatens a mediocre score, again. Mathews c Buttler b Jordan 56(67) [4s-3 6s-1]

36.5 - Plunkett to S Prasanna, out Caught by Bairstow!! Now, guess what, after some nine lives in one over, Prasanna perishes to a shot. A shot that looked good but found the fielder. Cross-seamer from Plunkett, hit the seam and coiled up slow, I reckon. Prasanna was early into the flick and placed it straight to deep mid-wicket. What's with Plunkett today? S Prasanna c Bairstow b Plunkett 2(5)

35.5 - Woakes to Chandimal, out Caught by Jordan!! Sometimes, efforts and results are out of sync. Horribly. Like here. A full ball lured Chandimal into a brutal hoick aimed over square leg, instead gets a leading edge. A vicious, traveling leading edge that pops up nicely all the way to third man. What a time to end this stand.. Chandimal c Jordan b Woakes 62(77) [4s-5]

21.2 - Plunkett to Kusal Mendis, out Caught by Hales!! Pulled straight into the lap of deep square leg. It's a short ball, a loosener really by Plunkett's standards - just about nudging 80mph and Mendis has failed to keep it down. It might have been deliberate actually to hit it in the air, just like he did with Jordan, but fails to clear the fence. Another Lankan batsman failing to kick on after a fifty in this series. Kusal Mendis c Hales b Plunkett 53(66) [4s-5 6s-1]

8.2 - Plunkett to K Perera, out Caught by Buttler!! The frustration comes out finally and puts an end to a troubled innings. Looks for a wild heave to this length delivery on the stumps and ends up getting the top-edge that kisses the clouds and drops safely into Jos Buttler's gloves. Poor shot selection must confess, but Plunkett strikes first over. K Perera c Buttler b Plunkett 9(25)

0.5 - Willey to Gunathilaka, out Bowled!! plays it on!! Willey pushes it full and swings it away for the first time in the morning and Gunathilaka decides to leave it at the very last moment. Ends up getting an inside-edge onto his stumps. Late judgement resulting in his downfall. Just not the start that the Lankans would have hoped for. Willey strikes first over. Gunathilaka b Willey 1(2)

35.0 - Plunkett to Chandimal, 2 runs, oh! Bairstow runs in from deep square leg, slides in front but fails to latch onto this mistimed pull from Chandimal! Top effort. Chandimal was late on the pull, managed to just hold his bat above and steer it away, all half in control, only to get a lifeline. JB sees it early but is too deep. Sprints but comes short. Not again Sri Lanka, not again

7.4 - Woakes to K Perera, no run, dropped, would be unfair to call it that but a chance gone down. K Perera slaps this fuller one hard to the left of Woakes who actually did well to get his hands to the ball. Slips out at the last moment

40.4 - Plunkett to Mathews, 1 run, Mathews has a half-century. Mathews is reviving Sri Lanka. Again. Swats this to long-on and runs for the milestone and underwhelming celebrations

32.3 - Jordan to Chandimal, 1 run, picked off middle and leg and clipped behind square for a single A single which takes Chandimal to a half-century

18.5 - Adil Rashid to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, a handy fifty for Mendis. Loopy leg-break on middle and off, Mendis sticks his bat ahead, takes it on the full and sweeps it to deep mid-wicket. Now to kick on...

2.3 - Lakmal to Root, FOUR, top shot! Shortish delivery well wide outside off, Root waits and cuts it to perfection to deposit this behind the square fence

0.3 - Lakmal to Hales, out Caught by Chandimal!! And the law of averages catches up. Shortish delivery from Lakmal and it leaves the batsman a touch after pitching. Hales looks to drive it on the up and ends up getting a faint tickle on it for Chandimal to pouch it. Too early to be playing this kind of a stroke. Just the start the Lankans needed to stay in this contest.Hales c Chandimal b Lakmal 0(1)
